What a pleasant surprise.
It is indeed a pleasant surprise. The process has been lampooned and criticized as usual when a city tries to improve itself with modern ideas, but Honolulu seems to have the tenacity to pull it off.
The airport extension was critical given that flying is the only way to really travel between the islands. Easy travel to and from the airports should be an integral part of the region’s infrastructure.
Good job, Honolulu leaders! Keep building, even when people can’t see why it matters that you build for population growth with transit like trains that can scale magnitudes better then a car only strategy.
It honestly makes a lot of sense. Honolulu is densly populated and small. So a metro can work as both a normal metro and kind of like a railway. Obviously the extension to the city center is needed, but if that is done 2/3 of the island is within an easy bike ride of a metro station.
