I wouldn’t know. The verb is itadaku which is a humble form of the verb morau, meaning “to receive”. The imasu part is basically just polite grammar. If there is anything religious about it, it’s obscure.

I’d assume that’s the issue. How often do you talk about crocodiles in your everyday life? Now imagine you’d have to decipher the kanji. It’s simply more convenient because people can’t be expected to remember the kanji for a billion animals.

They’re not saying, “in order to be allowed to use these glasses, these are the prerequisites and then you’re good to go”, they’re saying that the law would in theory require them to announce themselves loudly, implying that that’s of course unrealistic and thus using these glasses cannot be allowed.

Did you mean itadakimasu?

Because that is what you say in Japanese when you start eating but interestingly it doesn’t mean “Guten Appetit” (basically “have a nice meal”) but “I am (thankfully) going to receive (a nice meal)”. While “Guten Appetit” is about others who are eating alongside you, “itadakimasu” is about the speaker.

I mean, what if I miss the beans? What then, huh?!
