There have been some claims that the numberphile video is very misrepresentative of the underlying math. But I never dug deep enough into it.

Bicycling@lemmy.world•The kindness of strangers: I had a heart attack while mountain biking and someone saved my bicycleEnglish
6·5 days agoFrom the title I thought it was sarcastic. “They left me to die, but at least my bike will live on”
Happily, that’s not what happened :)

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some words that you have or had troubles spelling and made up funny ways to help remember them?

5·6 days agoIn many languages the days are numbered, e.g. “First day”, “Second day”, …, “Seventh day”. Speakers of those languages have no question about when the week starts.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_of_the_days_of_the_week#Numbered_days_of_the_week
Notably, the older languages start the week on Sunday. Some of the languages that start the week on Monday can be attributed to mistranslation from the former group. So starting the week on Sunday is historically more correct.
Disclosure: I speak a language that starts the week on Sunday, so I’m biased.
Literal superpower. You hold us all at your mercy.
Is it worth it? That depends. What percentage of the boys does it bring to the yard?
Yes. In a frictionless vacuum.

My biggest gripe is:
- Save game
- (without ever resuming gameplay) Exit game
- “Are you sure? Any unsaved progress will be lost!”
I JUST SAVED! YOU KNOW I JUST SAVED! YOU KNOW THERE’S NO RISK OF PROGRESS LOSS!
In most of those cases there’s no “save and exit” option.
The de facto lingua franca is English, except things like “de facto” or “lingua franca”.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What is the deal with IPv6?
83·12 days ago2038 is going to be a fun year with all the 32bit clocks overflowing to 1970
Actually 13 December 1901, since it overflows to negative, not zero.
Other than that, good answer, full marks

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How come assassinations went away for the most part? Why send a bunch of god fearing young kids into a battle the upper class started or wanted when clipping one leader would stop it?
3·13 days ago“For the most part” does not mean “entirely”.
I’m not taking a side here: maybe you’re right, maybe OP’s right. But I won’t stand for such cheap arguments!
Edit: just saw OP made a similarly terrible argument in another comment chain. Welp.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•What do you think goes through an animal’s mind and POV?

It’s not insightful or anything, but I think it’s an interesting coincidence that you’re asking this question so soon after it was published.
Where I am, you get a message when it’s been used, but obviously not any identifying information.
Also I have absolutely no way of knowing if the message is legit or they just tell you that a random time after your donation regardless just to make you feel good and donate again.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why are there no active casual conversation communities?
6·18 days agoAfter casually conversing once, I like to speedrun all future conversations. It’s not competitive, I just try to beat my own PB.

linuxmemes@lemmy.world•I'm looking for a free OS, should it be Debian or Arch Linux(community)?
5·19 days agoThis is such a fantastic answer. I wish stuff like this was the top search result for these questions.
I will note that perhaps Linux Mint should get a ♻️, since it comes with a very simple “Driver Manager” utility that detects your GPU and allows you to select the appropriate proprietary driver for it. The onboarding welcome program directs you to open it.

3·24 days agoIt was a slight exaggeration, but curl and libcurl are genuinely used pretty much everywhere. Including NASA space missions.

I hate when that happens. Gotta be a manufacturing error. It happens to me all the time with spoons as well, I’m eating with one normally, and then suddenly it turns inside out and can’t grab any soup!
