  • My guess is the land study since sonar is much newer than roads. Google tells me we became interested in sonar vs sea life in World War II with the discovery of the deep scattering layer causing false detections of land mass.

I’d think just basic study of foot traffic on walking paths and what animals still show up vs in fields or forests would be something people notice.

There are some actions we take that can inadvertently help animals, but a lot does seem to disregard the effects on non-human life. Heck, just read half the articles shared here today to see we do a poor job of regarding effects on our fellow humans as well!

  • Ahh, now I see it’s a crossed over image! I thought you had dropped in an owl from another photo and it was facing more directly at the camera.

I have so much trouble with those seeing eye pictures. I could never get it as a kid when they came out. I’ve tried it a few times over the years, got it for one day, and then lost it again. It feels like one of my greatest failures. Damn pictures!

  • I do get that, and with the .ML group starting this platform, of course there are a lot of kinds of leftist people here. In a way I enjoy it, even if I don’t agree with a number of people’s views. Spending time here has really made me confused as to what descriptor I could put on my general set of political beliefs.

The part that frustrates me is all posts are either every comment just says the same thing (ie. This person sucks, may some disaster fall upon them.) or it turns into people bickering about who is the best type of leftist. So I get people complaints about either “group think” or that everyone is just fighting each other in every thread like how communists and anarchists seem to have done for the past century.

I don’t see much education, discussion/debate, or anyone organizing or promoting direct action like I’d hope. I’m not a real fan of the ML philosophy, but someone like cowbee I see share a ton of reading material and educational stuff for their belief system is what I’d personally like to see more of from folks like the anarchists and dem socialists. I’d like to see people share stories from programs they’re involved in. I’d love to learn more about stuff like Food Not Bombs or how people are trying to unionize, not from news articles, but by the people here on Lemmy.

Being here got me to take action helping the wildlife in my community, and I’d like to hear about other people actually becoming forces of change. If all of us just stay behind a screen arguing with each other, what is the point of that? You guys have to be up to some good stuff, and I want to see it and be inspired. I got near infinite mainstream news sites if I want to be annoyed and worked up, but I’m here.

  • They live in areas scattered all over South America. They seem very strange, as I can’t imagine there are the same trees all the way from the equator to near Antarctica. In all the photos I look at, they don’t seem well camouflaged. This paper says they can be found in rainforest, dry forest, and even urban environments.

Their cousins are the Saw Whets and the Boreal, which all seem much more color-matched to their environments. This site has almost 50 photos and it doesn’t seem to blend in the best, though artificial light is being used.

Speaking of fancy colors, I did find this photo from this photographer’s exotic owl archives that shows they have light blue eyelids as well. Very unique!
