PieFed Meta@piefed.social•Apps are built by third parties. Maybe even the piefed developers are involved in their development.English
1·5 days agoVoyager - that’s the one that felt cumbersome to me
Blorp - uhhh. I thought it was only an alternative web UI. I’ll try the app out, thanks!
I already see that in inbox there are no notifications from feeds. But the “draft” feature is here

2·5 days agoMe too, as PWA
- notifications don’t work for me
- links open in the same window instead of going to the app
so yt links open yt page instead of NewPipe - there is no “drafting”
so if I swipe back when typing a comment, I’ll go back and my WIP comment will be gone - seeing votes (the up and down popup) is a gamble
- when I expand three dots I’m always afraid I’ll click something when trying to scroll
- in order to share the link I need to open the drawer
I was using apps with Reddit and Lemmy and the experience was much better. But so far AFAIK none of the apps support Piefed features in non-cumbersome way, so I’m waiting until one does

1·5 days agoThere are some issues with plain browser UI. The way Android (for example) memory is managed it can be flushed even if you switch just for a moment. Touch based input needs a different approach than desktop one, etc. IMO in general apps provide better experience. And when those are open-source, most probably one doesn’t have to worry about snooping, like with the apps created by for-profits
But I don’t think the basic web UI and or PWA is going away. It’s rather that apps are a quite widely shared preference

If my imagination how that website might look like is right, the guy was totally right
And bonus points: next time they need to download/update them, they can just bring the one-liner back from history, instead of doing all that clicking and waiting and choosing directory again
GUIs have lower entry bar but in the long run TUIs and CLIs are just more user friendly. One only needs to learn a bit beforehand
older people who are so used to using CLIs
I don’t think this is about age. When I was a kid it already was GUIs everywhere. Yet, I’m a CLI/TUI person
Oh, a bit like inheritance in pure C? Where as long as inheriting struct puts the parent struct as first field, you can pass it to functions that use parent struct because the memory layout rules ensure that this part of memory will be exactly the same in both?

3·11 days agoIt’s kind of refreshing to have self defense as an option when games of this genre usually rely on feeling defenseless to instill terror.
Sorry, I didn’t get it from the description. What would you say is the genre of this game? Doesn’t sound like walking simulator

Fediverse@lemmy.world•Commands/formatting for posting to Lemmy from MastodonEnglish
1·11 days agoAlso, no hashtags. They won’t break anything, Lemmy simply doesn’t support hashtags
True for Lemmy, but Piefed does support hashtags, and those are essential for Mastodon. So maybe stripping those is not a strict requirement
Also, for testing I guess one could use !playground@piefed.social
I understand. But with how downvotes are sometimes, but often IMO, used - a vote on agree/disagree, in a way that feature becomes “I don’t want to see opinions of people that disagree with me”. It does make it exotic
So the chances that it will be developed and tested is rather low, chances that there will be enough social support for having it is rather low
The problem with that is then instead of having 15 downvotes and two comments with a bunch of upvotes you will end up with 15 (probably less but just to portray my point) comments all saying more or less the same. And since (IIRC) Lemmy does not have notifications one could enable on other comments, you would be discussing the same thing in 15 separate threads because your interlocutors won’t see your responses in the other threads
I mean - without downvotes we have no way of signalling “I don’t agree with this take, this and that comment voice my opinions”
But we don’t have a mechanic for “I’ve seen this and didn’t clap”, other than a downvote

I think, in such case, you should rather look for a service hosted for you
For example
https://elest.io/open-source/nextcloud
https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-share/
Yes, it’s called a NAS. Correct. Correct
The thread might get locked here under “no support” rule, self-hosting comms will be a better fit
https://piefed.social/f/selfhost
Edit: and if you want to dive into self-hosting, I guess, check out yunohost and LibrePhotos. Immich is also popular one
