He seems overly dramatic about it. and some of the things are factually incorrect. for example, he says we functionally do the same things, but we do not, we essentially now run much more complex software in browsers. the best way that i can put it, is, browsers are practically virtual machines, which run softwate like word processors and meetings. I am not encouraging anything here, I myself am the kind of guy who refuses to use web applications, but I understand why people use them. in the broll, there was some example of a few tabs open, and only 2 gigs of memory usage. not sure exactly how old that clip is, but things have changed, many for better. for example, your browsers ususally limit memory usage to half of total available (be it 4 gig, or 8 gig or 16 gig (tthere are now some better/finer things related to exact limit, but lets not go there)), and if you have larger amount of ram available, your browser caches more (save future cpu/gpu cycles). Also, we now have better sandboxing and better isolation of tabs, which results in duplication of assets, but better security. you can still do some manual tweaking (i do, for example, disable js by default, or instead of per tab isolation, i have per site instace, which is less secure, but more efficient, plenty more), nobody stops you from doing that.

I do get the hatred for cloud shift. I dislike it too, and maintain offline stuff. but that has nothing to do with hardware performance decreasing. if anything, it would lead to less memory/storage required, as most of compute will be done in server. you would have lighter machines, with just display and inputs. and this was the exact model of computing 40yrs ago, servers/mainframes and weaker terminals.

if you want to complain about stuff, you can complain about excess use of js, or writing desktop stuff in js (this while is worse than using some compiled languages, it is not that bad), or about the amount of things that now want your attention. you can rant about bad tech practices, but not, about comparing a modern web + video editing, as opposed to older static sites

you can create a python virtual environment, and you do not even have to install python for that. you can install python in a user only mode, and then create a virtual environment (these can be made anywhere, so for example, your downloads or documents folder(assuming you are allowed to access these folders, you usually do)), script would have to be modefied a bit, but still doable. In case you need help for this, feel free to reply/message

I am not sure, but was not there a work profile app in fdroid (possibly by the name of shelter, have not used it for a long time though, so not sure). If is/was on fdroid, it is likely to be foss, and not have these things.

Also, unless the app has internet permisions, I would not worry much about it. Apps can send data even without internet permissions (by means of using a 3rd party, like gms (google play service) or something else), but if your app relies on some 3rd party app, i would not consider it safe to begin with.

the app has not been updated for 1.5 years, but readme suggests that it is in a functional state, and just requires maintainance on newer sdks, which they suggest that they still provide. - https://gitea.angry.im/PeterCxy/Shelter. you have encountered the same bug as me (https://lemmings.world/post/28452192) the problem is that arch (or cachyos) now defaults to using wine-wow64 builds (no 32 bit libraries required) and that has something to do with it. I have not beeen able to fix it, and do not know where to report (wine team will not consider bugs concerning pirated installers)

In India, Punjab Haryana side (north west near pakistan border) were traditionally the bread baskets. But after a crop failures and droughts in 1960s and in 70s, they were experimented here and they were successful - a gree revolution for 10 or so years. But these varieties were very water intensive, and seeing the yields, most farmers just continously year on year did atleast 2 ccrops a year (a winter one (wheat) and a summer (rice)). This made the lands a lot less productive and many parts of the land since then have nearly become barren. 2 crops per year were normal, but it usually was never this intensivem and natural processes to restore the land (artificial or natural fertilisers, or burning parts of previes crops, or tilling) were just not effective. This lead to reduction in output, and today, a lot of youth just can not do farming, either because they do not want to (they have seen/heard of hard times from parents, or just do not have good land left to farming. This is also one of the reasons why a lot of punjabi-haryanvi diaspora is now outside India - many students just did not see a future here, and if their parents had some money from the good times, they sent their children abroad (us and canada makorly).

The intention to improve crop yield was right, but the implementation went wrong, and consequences were not great. We did not have a major famine since. Many other states took the job of producing these crops (either they partially adopted the newer seeds, or just had external investments, and used older stuff in a less intensive manner), but atleast the punjab side region lost a lot.

edit - after reading again, I forgot to add that a big part of the problem was also fertilisers. with the hyv (high yield variety) seeds, fertilisers and pesticides adoption also became the norm, and this made the yield more to very high levels for 10-15 years (uptil early 90s). but with time, land became less productive, and the amount (and hence cost) of fertilisers kept on in increasing, and this is a major part of why it was not as economicaaly viable to do farming anymore.

Most research papers are written in English, if you need international cites, collaboration or accolades. A person may even speak english but it is not good enough, or they spell bad. But then the llm is purely a translator/grammar checker.

But there are people who use it to do the latter, use it to generate stuff, and that is bad imo

others have given pretty good picture of what you have to do, but you can also do this in some other language, for example in binary, or ascii, and then reduce the font size to something close to 1 pixel. the actual text of pdf is stored in seperate xml tags. Plus you can also write it simply in plain text anywhere near margin of page (no need to do color or size shenanigans) and simply crop pdf out. Cropping of pdf does not remove the stuff, just hides it. Unless you rasterise pdf afterwards and then submit, the stuff is simply there with no special amount of work required.

that could be the case. but what I have seen my younger peers do is use these llms to “read” the papers, and only use it’s summaries as the source. In that case, it is definitely not good.

you can do that if you do not have integrity. but i can kinda get their perspective - you want people to cite you, or read your papers, so you can be better funded. The system is almost set to be gamed
