This is tongue in cheek, right? People commonly talk like this though, and it always drives me bugshit because it’s so easy and tempting to reify chaos as a personal adversary. There are conspiracies, but they are many and have definite, limited aims. And they aren’t all related to each other. Sometimes it can feel that way because so many rich people have the same means and motivations, but they’re not a vast conspiracy with total cohesive aims.

I get that. I live as an immigrant American in the UK, and it’s very frustrating sometimes. I more get along with the people who hate America, but I’m used to seeing the light in their eyes die when they hear my accent the first time. I don’t wash my hands of anything America has done, but I’ve done everything I practically can. I still vote, I stay informed, and I am depriving the regime of my taxable income.

I watch with great satisfaction when a leftist sets a cop car on fire, but I have a family to think about. I can’t be doing those kinds of heroics, and the temptation to throw down was too great when I was living stateside. I have pacifist beliefs and ideals, but not pacifist emotions. I probably never will. Growing up has been a slow motion destruction of everything I was raised to think I was part of. I was raised in cosmopolitanism and intellectualism, only to learn that my country had abandoned those ideals decades before my birth (if they were ever sincerely held at all).

I do understand hating Americans, I’m the conflicted vampire-hunting daywalker of hating Americans. But even I try not to judge people purely by their governments, that would just be stupid. Imagine hating North Koreans or Russians, it’s obviously wrong. What are they supposed to do, overthrow their governments? Their governments that are orders of magnitude weaker than the US government? See?

A quick few searches tell me that less than one percent (0.7%) of the population have janitorial jobs, at least in the US (easiest data to grab quickly here). It seems not at all insurmountable to find one in a hundred people who don’t mind bad smells and just want a simple job where they can listen to stuff and not think too hard. I’ve worked those jobs myself, and even without good pay it is pretty nice to just listen to books or music and not have to think too hard at work. If I could thrive on a job like that, I actually wouldn’t mind. It just seems like a bad example of why anarchism wouldn’t work, at least to me.

Cleaning isn’t an inherently undignified job, it’s just that we associate it with poor working conditions, inadequate compensation, and low status. None of those are inherent to the work. Both you and I would do fine in a job like that, if we were respected and got what we needed from society. For work that is genuinely unpleasant, there’s no reason I know of there can’t be non-monetary perks that would make it worthwhile.
