Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•We really need to bring back the 70s conversation pits
1·5 hours agoGood point, i’m pretty sure it was assuming slab foundation. I kinda remember it being specific to ranch style homes in a part of the country where the land was completely flat
Might have actually been this specific Reddit post I’m remembering
I agree it’s hard to know what’s part of divide and conquer political psyops and whether that was the intention or not of the person that created the original content.
I personally scrolled by this and read it as a debate about feminism in its most basic sense (equality for all) vs conservative traditionalism and patriarchy (heirarchy based control). Not as an attack on men, or to exclude anyone who doesn’t fall into the heteronormative categories which exist as a consequence of the protected heirarchies demanded by conservative traditionalism and patriarchy.
Like the propaganda behind conservative traditionalism has always relied on convincing people that all of modern society’s problems are simply due to moving further away from the traditional values of the past. It’s circular logic that offers easy and appealing solutions to those being targeted with propaganda, while offering a scapegoat and relying on supporters to either remain unaware of or intentionally ignore the very obvious problems caused by conservative heirarchies (“values”) the traditionalist movement seeks to preserve and strengthen.
For example, addressing the declining standard of living with each successive generation, lack of affordable housing, affordable education, and job opportunities in the United States. Traditional conservativism often targets young men by offering them easy solutions to the issues by claiming they were caused by the feminist and civil rights movements moving American society away from the traditional values (heirarchies) that were already in place. DEI practices that arose from those movements mean that the resources previously available for young men to build the American dream, are now unavailable because they’re being handed to women and minorities while young men have been forgotten. Essentially, these movements have upset the natural order of things, and until that order is restored, there will be no way to fix the problems. How do you fix the problem? Remove equality.
It’s definitely true that opportunity, housing, affordability, and standard of living have all noticably declined in the U.S over the last 50 years. The argument that the lack of available resources in the U.S. in 2026 can be traced to the most salient social movements 50 years prior (1970’s) is an easy conclusion to make out of context. It requires you have some knowledge of the most often discussed history of the decade without acknowledging what was simultaneously happening in the background of the U.S. in response to those movements.
Blaming social equality movements and toppling of established heirarchies, very intentionally ignores the fact that since the 1970’s wealth has become increasingly concentrated in the hands of the 1%. It also ignores the fact that the 1970’s marks the establishment of the first U.S. conservative think tanks (Heritage Foundation, Free Congress Foundation), which were funded by billionaires, and created in direct response to fighting the civil rights movement by establishing political influence and promoting conservative economic and social policies, which both ultimately favor economic inequality.
Tldr: To restore and preserve the conservative natural order and heirarchy, the policies promoted are always backed by traditional values that require division by default.
The traditionalist movement argues a woman’s place is in the home, supported by a hardworking man. While equality based movements would argue a woman’s place, (like any autonomous human being, regardless of class, race, or other identity like male, female, cis, trans, NB etc.), is wherever they want it to be. Whether that’s at home, working, single, married, straight, queer, kids, no kids etc. It promotes equal choice for the individual rather than demanding conformity. The entire point is there are no pre-established roles set out for her or anybody else.
Opportunities and resources are available to everyone who chooses to pursue them, rather than kept locked away under the control of a small but heavily insulated and protected 1%, who will then decide how to divide up whatever meager resources they’re willing to allow the other 99% to share and fight over for their own survival.
Edit: it’s one thing to not know what’s going on, but hard to imagine being a willing cuck for the top 1% of the country. And yet … Since 1975, nearly $80 trillion in wealth has been redistributed from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%.

It’s like Trump sensed something wholesome might be happening amongst all nightmare reign of terror, and immediately began plotting how to stop it. Mainly bc he’s worried minding his own fucking business and just focusing on trying to actually do his job might make him look weak… So instead he’s got to prove how powerful he is by shutting down the Gordie Howe bridge…

What’s with all the Trump + mighty ducks references/call backs reality keeps throwing out lately? Are they planning a reboot?
(Named after Gordie Howe)

Bonus:

Reminds me a lot of Weezer’s blue album.

2·2 days agoOh my bad, I assumed you were making the Hegseth argument in favor of macho Jesus. You would be surprised how many people argue that the sword is meant to be literal.
My interpretation is that Jesus could very easily be warning of situations like the modern day MAGA and so called “Christian” nationalist movement. Christianity is being exploited and weaponized in order to shield and preemptively justify the despicable acts being committed by very evil men.
Nothing they do can be criticized as long as it’s being done in the name of spreading Christian Nationalism. It’s essentially a modern manifest destiny, and they plan to take whatever they want. If you criticize what men like Trump and Hegseth are doing, you’re then accused of attacking America and Christianity.
The hope is that people will be too scared to speak out against them, due to fear of being accused of something like the vague domestic terrorism pre-crimes laid out in NSPM-7.
However, if you choose to stay silent as a Christian when you understand exactly what these men are doing, just because you’re afraid of the trouble you might bring on yourself, then you’re refusing to pick up the sword of Jesus. You’re making your choice by choosing peace in the form of silence in order to placate the authoritarian men who you know are exploiting the message of Christ for their own personal gain. Essentially, Jesus is warning that your silence will make you complicit.

2·2 days agoreligious belief is an almost inextricably deep part of a person’s psyche (a lot like sexuality and gender actually).
This is really interesting. I never really thought about it that way before but it makes a lot of sense. It really is this deeply personal and human thing.
It’s also one of those traits where it’s like the harder you try to pin it down and formalize it, the further away you get from the true origin.
I had a similar discussion with my husband before about the emotional aspect of religion, and we kind of came to the conclusion it might be in part, why we have really different ways of making arguments or explaining things.
We were raised in pretty different backgrounds, and for the most part (unless it’s an inherently emotional discussion), he stays calm and even tempered when discussing things, even when he’s passionate about them. I admittedly tend to get a bit overly passionate? I guess
He normally tends to have the advantage when it comes to making a persuasive argument or point. However, religion is one of the rare exceptions where people often seem to need that emotional fire to make a persuasive argument to other religious people. Like, he knows a lot about religions, but he lacks that emotionally charged capacity. His family went to church some but it wasn’t like a fire and brimstone kinda experience, so sometimes he will need me to breakdown the emotion behind religious debates like a translator.
This isn’t a great analogy, but maybe using a strictly logic based argument (even one based on religious facts) to try to persuade a religious person to change their opinion, might be similar to trying to explain why a joke is funny. Something gets lost in the process and it might miss the mark and just land as disingenuous without either person even really being able to explain why.
And yeah, there have definitely been concerted efforts by states and rich people and tyrannical assholes of all sorts who want to use this thing that has such a deep hold on most people to justify themselves
So, this is random, but I’m really interested in tracing and understanding the origins of the religious right movement (Heritage Foundation and the moral majority), and your comment really has me thinking about how this could apply to the oligarchs who have funded it since the earliest days.
Specifically, when you mentioned the historical efforts of people trying to capture this really elusive piece of the human psyche, it made me think of the ending of Madmen, and the main character’s big “aha!” moment.
Essentially, throughout the show he’s the epitome of the 1960’s American advertising executive, and as the decade comes to a close, he has this realization that America sort of seems to be losing its infatuation with consumerism. He winds up meditating and seems to have a big breakthrough about what he can still capitalize on even if America believes they’re ditching “consumerism.” So, presumably, he will go on to market the spiritualism/guru movement of the 1970’s.
Obviously, that’s just a TV show, but until reading your comment, I never really thought about the fact that those 2 movements (spiritualism/guru and the religious right) oddly seemed to emerge at roughly similar times (early 1970s). Honestly, I can’t help but wonder if something like that could have been the pitch that inspired oligarchs to fund the movement?
It’s especially interesting when you think about the way American marketing tends to exploit partisanship. You have one revenue generating source marketed to the left (spiritualism) and one marketed to the (religious) right.

1·3 days agoThis wording seems to be at variance with Jesus’ title of “Prince of Peace” (see Isaiah 9:6,7; 65:25). However, Lapide explains He comes to bring a spiritual peace of mind and a peace among the faithful, but not an earthly peace.
This is a much-discussed passage, often explained in terms of the “apocalyptic-eschatological” context of the 1st century.
R. T. France explains the verse, in context with the subsequent verse 35: “The sword Jesus brings is not here military conflict, but, as vv. 35–36 show, a sharp social division which even severs the closest family ties. … Jesus speaks here, as in the preceding and following verses, more of a division in men’s personal response to him.”
You might disagree and feel that the sword is meant to be taken literally and not metaphorically, but if so, then presumably you would then be taking the entire verse literally in it’s context.
Christ Brings Division 34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.
Presumably, if you’re taking the sword of Jesus literally and within its context, then Jesus is telling sons to take up the sword against their fathers and daughters to take it up against their mothers.
Why would Jesus need or want you to take up a literal weapon against your own parents to prove your love for him?

41·3 days agoI’m about 99% sure you’re a fucking troll, but what the hell maybe somebody can scroll by and learn something. Bc clearly your mind is already made up and you know everything there is to know about anything.
But for anybody who maybe doesn’t have it all figured out yet, this is why it’s not such a brilliant fucking idea to lump all poor people together and strip away their humanity regardless of whether they’re actual rabid Nazis and Nazi supporters or just people stuck living in poverty and under the boot of the oligarchs who targeted and captured them decades ago.
I very much understand. I live in a blue dot in a red state. I grew up in a red state. The oligarchy that you’re just now noticing is something I’ve been pushing against my entire life. When I was a kid, wealthy conservatives started buying up all the local radio stations across America. Then they started buying up all the local TV stations. Then they started buying up all the social media networks.
So I know this is probably so beneath you, but just try to put yourself in the shoes of one of these people for a second. Just for a moment, for shits n giggles imagine these are just humans like you and me.
How does any human come to hold any set of beliefs or make decisions about anything? It’s not a trick question or even rocket science. It’s basically just input and output. They take in information and that information typically influences the future decisions they make.
Regarding oral health and cognitive abilities, you’re actually so fucking wrong here it should almost be a crime for you to be so ignorantly confident.
I’ll post the links here in just a second, but I promise you, oral health is significantly correlated with both quality of life and overall health, including cognitive functioning.
•Recent Research Points to a Two-Way Relationship Between Mental and Oral Health
•Oral health: A window to your overall health
If you’re living in poverty, struggling with health issues, and working to scrape by day to day, believe me, life tends to get a little rough. Sometimes you can barely keep up with the things going on in your own world, let alone outside of that world. So when you do have a second to check out what’s going on outside of your own surroundings, how do you do that?
Radio, TV, and social media right? Or have you ascended to some plane of higher consciousness that allows you to tap into a collective hive mind and become one with the rest of the world? Regardless of how you may have ascended, most people are limited to readily available technology for their information. Guess who controls all of that information?
You know the reason I’m even on Lemmy is because Reddit is now as controlled as Facebook and other social media. People kept telling me I was being paranoid because I kept saying I was pretty sure state police or affiliates (who just happen to be official partners with ICE and the federal government) had been monitoring and censoring discussions on my local subreddit for quite some time. So, imagine how surprised I was to read an article in national news about DHS records of ICE contractors and state fusion centers specifically monitoring my city’s subreddit? Answer: Not very.
So, not only are oligarchs keeping you and everyone around you uneducated, sick, and poor, they’re also tightly controlling and even censoring every obvious way you have of sharing and discussing information. Why do you think that is? 🤔
Have you ever looked at a presidential election map of Democrat’s victory in 1992 compared to their loss in 1988? Probably not, because most people don’t really talk about it.
Here’s 1988:

Here’s 1992:

What is it that you think made all those states (full of rabid Nazis these days) go from showing such sweeping support of Bush in '88 and Reagan '80 and '84), to suddenly flipping blue for a godless demoncrat? Is it because red states just love the Clinton’s so much they couldn’t resist?
Obviously they despise them now, and Clinton dropped the act by the time he ran for his second term, but most people seem to have forgotten that •Clinton ran as a populist during his first term.
He reached out to these people and said I hear you, I see you, I know you’re hurting and you need help. Let me help you. Surprisingly it worked. Unsurprisingly, it was shortly after Clinton’s victory, that oligarchs began snatching up radio stations across America and tightening their grip on information flowing into these states.
So, when you lump all these people together and refuse to see them as humans, just what the fuck do you think you’re accomplishing? You’re providing the administration with ammunition and propaganda they will then use once it’s time for them to make the rounds and remind these people that the rest of America truly does hate them.
Clearly, you seem to view these people as something other than yourself. As deserving the blame for their own situation, as though they’re unworthy of the basic standard of living that every American should have, and is more than entitled to. But these people have nobody to blame but themselves, right?
So when JD Vance is making the next rounds, he doesn’t even have to promise these people anything for their support. He just has to remind them of what every radio, news, and internet source tells them already. The left hates you because you’re not one of them. You don’t belong in their world.
Regardless of whether they vote or don’t even bother to vote, do you think there’s any chance they ever support a movement that has already rejected them? Why the fuck would they mobilize in solidarity with people that refuse to even see them as human?
