I celebrated my birthday in the woods and watched my toddler nephew climb rocks for the first time. 10/10

Prepping a flower bed. Needed compost so we had to evict the compost rats.

Was a bit stressful, wife cried a lot at the though of hurting them. We carefully disassembled the mound, two kids were too frightened to move so we had to carefully remove them to the rock pile mum booked it into. They were old enough to fend for themselves though, just obviously a stressful sitch for them.

Anyway they were so cute, and I wish we could have adopted them rather than risk them dying due to their home being deconstructed. Unfortunately wild rats don’t do well in captivity, so I hope they manage to find a new shelter.

New compost pile is having its rat proofing upgraded, they’re resourcesful critters though so we’ll see if it’s enough.

Went to an observatory my alma mater runs out in the mountains to look at stars earlier this month. It was great, kinda cloudy at first but once the skies cleared we got a great look at some globular clusters and cool stars. Also saw some baby foxes playing in the woods on our way up there, extremely cute

I fucked up by wearing the wrong footwear and now my feet need to be given rest. But other than that, I found some new abandoned areas in my, uh … area. I love abandoned areas where nobody is present! (ignore the guy sitting over there).

I also saw the bougie part of town, and over there, occasionally, especially at night, I get to see what I am assuming are satanic rituals. Like, rich white people in the night while its raining are gathered under a tree with fire torches. I ain’t kidding that’s some of the freakiest shit I’ve ever seen in my life. Although, I suppose, they did seem nice and greeted me properly.

Had a similar first time thing taking my child on his first backpacking trip out into actual primitive camping. We had to filter our water and put our food in lockers so no bears or coyotes would come for it, etc. On the hike on in he was pretty insufferable, even though it was only a mile. But even by evening he was already getting very into it, gathering kindling for the fire, seeing his first millipede, stuff like that. We did a lot of hiking around the second day, seeing some ruins, climbing some foothills. He really liked that.

I grew up on a farm, so for me this stuff is already pretty natural. But he’s born and raised in a major metropolitan city, so I am trying to make sure he actually knows how to touch grass. We’ve done car camping before, but it is pretty incredible how much more rustic just a simple mile hike between you and where cars are allowed can be.

Been working too much and my plans keep falling apart, but I did join in on a small protest on Memorial Day. I seriously missed out on two different social engagements this week because I was working 12s. I needed that social fix. :/

Went to the beach for a few hours on Friday. Had to end things early due to incoming thunderstorm. I tried out my new parasol and I’m enjoying gradually building up my collection of beach accessories. Next up is beach chair.
