That’s the cover-up for the fact they were recently exposed for lobbying digital ID laws into place in a few states (in America), and pending even on a national level.
Is anyone who really cares abut encryption, security, and privacy actually using Instagram and co. fr?
Maybe not, but adoption of E2EE by mainstream big tech platforms helps normalize it. Especially when governments keep trying to convince people that encryption is just for criminals.
If they did, it’s still entirely possible to use your own e2ee for messages between friends on any app just by using an encrypted keyboard app on your phone (like KryptEY).
Nobody using Instagram DM’s is actually going to go out of their way to encrypt messages like that, people who care about privacy are going to move their conversations to Signal or another secure app with E2EE built in
