As a better alternative to what I was using prior (Reddit and other stuff). Came to Lemmy.ml as it seemed like a good generalist option whose top categories include open source programs and technology, to which I’ve enjoyed reading further into.

Additionally, I didn’t know Lemmygrad exists, however I’m super glad it does. I regularly browse it, and through doing so, I’ve corrected several misconceptions I had held prior, gotten even more insights into history, put together a reading list to finally delve deeper (which I need to keep reminding myself to start), and I’ve renewed efforts to try to find a way to organize.

Trying to understand someone I adore who prefers Lemmy. Also, Reddit feels overrun with fake accounts and scammers.

Was thinking of trying something like Reddit. And I never imagined I would like a platform this much… And I’m also glad that I came to Lemmy instead of using Reddit

wanted reddit from 10+ years ago when it was a smaller more chill site more interesting in being nerdy and curious than being political grandstanding. used to be such a fun place to kill time and learn cool shit and read interesting stories. it was glorious until 2016 and started going downhill rapidly, IME. I was first banned from reddit in 2020 for ‘inciting violence’ by talking about my cat hunting rabbits. thought it was insane, and a few months later I was randomly unbanned. OK. Stopped using it in '22 entirely as I constantly being reported for random comments as ‘racism, violence, hate speech’ when I was often pointing out those behavior and attitudes.

fediverse cool at first but now it’s rapidly growing into another reddit with a ton of people here who are just to be crappy and spam their weird agendas and go around endlessly self promoting themselves and hating on anyone who isn’t like them. it’s increasingly just a site for people to dump their insanity and delusions and seek validation for doing so. I have blocked so many people in the past few months it’s insane, my block list is 100s now, and in '25 it was maybe a dozen.

That said there are still some pretty good thoughtful threads on here about various issues, usually for the first few hours they are up, but once they get some traction the crazies come out to harass anyone remotely thoughtful and call them names. I’ve seen some wonderful empathetic and compassionate discussions get completely derailed by shitheads, who also mod-report these thoughtful and interesting things as ‘hate speech’ because it doesn’t align with their simplified black or white view of the issue, and their missions is simple to shut down any discussion that isn’t a catchphrase or other bumper sticker takes by calling it hate speech, just like my comment about my cat killing rabbits was ‘animal abuse’.

dumb people ruin everything because they basically throw a tantrum when they can’t fit the square object into the round hole and declare that the square space must therefore be a hateful bigot, because all the world must be round holes and only things that fit through them should be allowed to exist.

    Got banned from Lemmygrad
because I’m not a US progressive,
as I’m not pro-US unless the country is given back the land to the indigenous people.

Reddit’s bot detection bot banned me for being a bot. The irony was too much.

First set of accounts on reddit perma banned for discussing jiujitsu technique - inciting violence.
Second set of accounts on reddit perma banned for recommending a lady with a stalker problem use her American freedom and get a gun for home defense - You know what you did type response.

I was already on Lemmy when my subs shut down to protest the API blackout.

Because reddit shut its api access off and “rif is fun for reddit” stopped working, duh.

I just want to see less bots and find real community and conversations. I also love the concept of decentralized platforms. I feel like the Internet mostly isn’t even real. I miss what it was like 15+ years ago.

Reddit destroying third party apps was the last straw for me. So, I hopped on kbin and some Lemmy instances. Reddit continues to degrade, and Reddit mods are annoying.

RIP Aaron Swartz (Reddit removed him as a founder).

Yup. I still miss my rif app. It just felt like such a bad decision. Especially limiting NSFW. I needed to try something else.

It wasn’t just that. I used the first party app so the API changes didn’t affect me. It was how bad they handled the whole situation that made me lose faith that reddit was going in a good direction. That thread “addressing” the changes and concerns was brutal.

Graduating from “leftist” Reddit, I’m afraid.

Gonna glaze the 'grad specifically - on the whole it’s done wonders for my revolutionary optimism and mental health, which in turn has lead to me actually doing some organizing irl.

Finding places full of people who actually know their shit and aren’t swept up into the lies of neoliberalism and capitalism is a major step up from feeling utterly alone and helpless in the imperial core surrounded by people who at times feel utterly alien and unreachable.

Basically just using this space to say thanks for existing, as well as thanks to such incredibly consistent and well-informed posters like yogthos, cfgaussian, cowbee, rainpizza and others for their constant analysis and discussions that have definitely patched up a lot of holes in my own understandings of leftist history and thought.
