It makes sense, same with Iceland. By participating in the EEA, Council of Europe, Schengen etc, they effectively are already beholden to most EU policies but without a seat at the policymaking table.

Having 1-2% of the votes in the European parliament is not worth giving up complete control over fisheries and monetary policy, in my opinion. They’d probably meddle with how Norway manages its natural resources, too.

I want to thank President Donald Trump for making EU enlargement ever more attractive.

A conservative saying it. Interesting. I thought conservatives everywhere had been corrupted to disparage unity

Western/Northern European conservatives are broadly similar to American conservatives, i.e. moderate Democrats, though European conservatives tend to support a much stronger welfare state (e.g., generally supporting universal health care and minimum income guarantees). It’s just that for various historical reasons, in the US ideological conservatives are called “liberal” and ideological fascists are called “conservative.” Fascism is popular in Europe as well, and they tend to oppose the EU.

The Tory leadership, at the time of the referendum, was against Brexit. Sure, there was a Tory faction in favour, and the referendum was partially aimed at placating them (in addition to some other goals, which also spectacularly backfired), but Cameron and his ilk certainly didn’t want the referendum to go the way it did.

Oh yeah sure. Then they all departed and left the sinking ship to the B team. Then the C team. And then the D team.

We have those as well, but they are the parties to the right of the conservatives.

I mean I would differentiate between Center-Right and Alt-Right. Many traditional conservative parties stand in large behind the EU and the European project in general

If the EU and Iceland figure out how to solve the remaining disagreements, like the fishing policy, then it’s very likely almost all objections Norwegian people had will also be gone.

The way our oil industry is setup is very much not compatible with eu laws (or even EEA)

There’s huge subsidies and huge taxes, and at least the subsidies are basically entirely illegal in the EU.
