You could also call it logic.

    Or empathy.

    Or heck just contrarianism.

Lots of room on the anti-capitalism bus.

My dad used to love the line, “when you start earning money you’ll become a Republican too”. Um, no. I debated him for decades and, much to his credit, it paid off. He’s been a solid Dem voter for the last 3 elections. I’m very proud of him!

From a more sad perspective, that could be because Democrats today are almost indistinguishable from what Republicans were decades ago. Remember that Nixon created the EPA and desegregated schools. Today they would pillory any Republican that even thought about doing something like that.

He only did those things because Vietnam was going so poorly so don’t give him too much credit.

Nope, it’s called empathy: being able to relate to the feelings someone ELSE is having, even though you are not.

It’s fine to do it selfishly too, I want everyone to live a dignified existence because I think that world would be much more pleasant to exist in.

a smart selfish person is indistinguishable from an altruistic one.

best things for someone is to live in a safe happy society. not wanting that isn’t selfish, it’s stupid

The bad thing is that this way of thinking is rare. I have friends that grew up dirt poor, then finally got some stability as adults … only to become crazy conservatives that think everyone is lazy and wants handouts.
