Had this local lumber yard trying to charge me $100 A BOARD FOR 8 FT PIECES!!!

It’s wavy cedar siding. It’s actually pretty common here up northern US.

I can’t imagine that price is right. I could see $50 or $60. Or is lumber really that insane?

I just need like 4 of them for a repair…

If it’s red cedar, yes, it’s that expensive. Just built two 4x16x4 cedar planters. Was not cheap.

I’ve been getting lumber sticker shock ever since Covid. It hasn’t gotten any better.

Quick sanity check would be to check pricing online for as close to the same lumber you can find on the Home Depot site or similar and see if your local yard is within the ballpark.

Turns out thats the price anywhere. Insanity.

It lasts a long time at least. Residing my house is going to cost 6 figures in the future I guess ha

Most good distributors are going to have existing clients, commitments and contracts. Sometimes the price to you or I will be based on making it worthwhile to deplete their stock-pile and potentially have to source replacements in a pinch later, because those contracts will include things like “will supply x board-feet in x shape in x timeframe at x price”, with penalties for non-compliance.

If you have the time to shop-around, by all means do so, but otherwise … yours is the pinch they were trying to avoid for themselves by quoting that price. It could also just be that they don’t stock below a certain quality/price-point, that you or I would find acceptable, but not their regular clients.

Did you check their pricing for other cuts?

Their support person seems very uninformed and can barely use email (young) so I’m not even sure they know theyre looking at the right boards.

Depends on the supplier. Cost of lumber did go up pretty dramatically after covid so expect it to be more expensive but that does sound overpriced.

I’d call around and see if you can find a better deal.
