Realistically, the American Revolution was about Socialism.
The Rebels wanted the government to build roads and canals but the British wanted the Americans to ship raw materials like cotton to England to be manufactured.
The Erie Canal was a giant government project that lowered food prices.
Don’t get me started on the Homestead Act, a huge government giveaway program.
That… That’s a novel take I gotta say. The crown was preventing Westward expansion, telling the colonists that they were not to engage in overt genocide and displacement. They were also relegating the colonial economy to raw materials like cotton and silver and paying low prices for it (that is, after all, what colonies are for). So when the people who decided to organize and lead a rebellion were land owning, slave owning, plantation owning merchants and financiers, do you really think the revolution was for socialism? Wouldn’t it be far more appropriate to say the revolution was about the private accumulation of greater amounts of wealth - through Westward expansion, through stronger position to negotiate prices, through elimination of taxes, and through the freedom to develop higher-end industry domestically - and thus that the revolution was about capitalism?
