The constant stream of “Muslims equals terrorists, most Palestinians are Muslims, therefore they are terrorists” helps a lot there.
And people want to be on the majority side which they identify as “good”.
Also you shouldn’t underestimate the fear factor.
If people admit that this was unnecessary police violence, they suddenly realise that nothing is stopping the police of doing that to them. So to calm their anxiety they will either say " immigrants, they shouldn’t be here in the first place" or “there must be more to that story, that we don’t see/know”.
