The US pretends that the continental USA isn’t an empire but it is. Aside from all the indigenous peoples who were exterminated, and the minorities that are marginalized and only tokenized when beneficial to the empire. The European settlers themselves come from diverse backgrounds and don’t agree on much. For a few centuries a national identity was fostered because everyone benefitted from the empire to various degrees and had a common enemy, but not anymore.

A breakup of the continental USA might seem unlikely but so did the fall of Rome. It might take decades or perhaps even another century, but more are realizing that the US doesn’t serve their interests anymore.
