In 2026, Australians are … placing low levels of trust in both the United States and China.
…
Trust in the United States to act responsibly in the world has fallen to 31%, the lowest level in the history of Lowy Institute polling. This new low represents a five-point drop from last year and a 25-point drop from 2024. By contrast, trust in China to act responsibly in the world has risen eight points since last year to 28%, narrowing the gap with the United States to just three points. In 2022, that gap was 53 points.
…
Australians place high levels of trust in liberal democracies and the United Nations. For the sixth year running, Japan is the most trusted power, with 89% of Australians saying they trust Japan to act responsibly in the world. Germany is the next most trusted power (83%), followed by the United Kingdom (81%).
Seven in ten Australians (70%) say the United Nations is either ‘somewhat important’ or ‘very important’ to Australia’s national interests.
…
For two of Australia’s key regional partners — Indonesia and India — trust remains steady if moderate. Trust in Indonesia to act responsibly in the world sits at 57%, similar to last year’s result. Australians’ trust in India fell four points from last year to 50%.
Of the countries surveyed, Russia was once again the power least trusted by Australians with only 11% saying they trust Moscow to act responsibly in the world.
…
If Australia doesn’t trust the US why do so many Australians seem to trust Pauline Hanson?
Getting reeeeeaaall sick of lowy’s CHINA SCARY BAD MAN schtick
Hi OP, where are you from?
If you are insinuating that being an Australian is a requirement to post here, you’d be in error.
I’m trying to work out if they have any other interest other than posting anti-Chinese articles on AZ. I see they post pro-Ukrainian stuff elsewhere but not here. Why is that? I asked them if they are a bot in another post. I don’t see any evidence from their post and comment history that they aren’t. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt before reporting them as an undeclared bot being used to stir up anti-Chinese sentiment.
@maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone
For starters, it is not your business where I am from.
And your remarks about me of being an ‘undeclared bot’ are, of course, rubbish. I post well-sourced articles (as you can see), but here on Lemmy are many propagandists that not only support dictatorial regimes but, more importantly, spread anti-Western content to stir up anti-democratic sentiment. Although I think these are mostly not bots but rather human beings parroting narratives provided by an orchestrated disinformation machine, you’ll find plenty of opportunity to spot them and call them out.
Consider the following: aussie.zone doesn’t want either the campist anti-Western propagandists nor campist pro-Western propagandists.
Them existing elsewhere does not give you a right to repeatedly spam political think tank pieces here. From your behaviour now and in the past, it is crystal clear that you have no respect for our community.
It is if you care about us paying attention to what you share.
What an odd reaction
Yeah they really hate it when they are called out

I don’t need to call them out. They aren’t spamming this instance with pro-China talking points. If they were they’d be called out by more regulars than just me. Why do you care what Australian’s think about China so much?
Are you one of these propaganda accounts that can’t cope with justified critique of China?
If you had any interest in the people that hang out here you would know that’s not the case.
I don’t see any evidence so far that you’re not a bot. Everyone here might disagree with me about that, but at least they’d be confident to say I’m not a bot. It’s the simple things, like posting a photo of a funny poster I saw, or sharing a link to a TV show I just watched and thought was OK. If the Swans make it to finals I might event post something about it this year. Maybe, been burned many times in the past 14 years though.
I think a lot people here might be hard pressed to say for sure that you’re not a bot. As far as I can see, you only post about two issues from generally the same sources. China and Ukraine.
Why not just say where your interest in these topics comes from?
Never been offered one of these surveys, sure as hell wouldn’t trust Germany between the rally back to the Nazi days and bending over backwards to appease and defend Israel’s bloodthirst. Somehow at the same time.
