Reddit will start requiring people to be logged into Reddit to use old.reddit.com.
The new requirement will take effect “over the next month,” a Reddit employee going by the username boat-botany announced on the social media platform today. The person claimed that the change is part of an ongoing effort to “tighten how automated systems access Reddit.”
The Reddit employee wrote:
Old Reddit’s logged-out experience is a significant source of abusive scraping and automated traffic on the platform. It’s also an important interface for many long-time mods and Redditors. To strike the right balance between preserving your access to Old Reddit while preventing abusive scraping and automated traffic, over the next month we will start requiring everyone to log in.
“Abusive scraping” implies that there is scraping they don’t consider abusive. If that were the case, they wouldn’t be trying to block all scraping. Disingenuous pricks.
I’d been hoping they forgot about old.reddit.com altogether.
Nope, as soon as they remembered it, they stuff it up.
Yeah, fuck you spez and the horse you’re on.
Ongoing enshittification.
End of an era. And the inevitability of them using your information.
No it won’t: I stopped going there so I don’t need to worry about it.
Already started for me this morning. Reddit is now inaccessible to me. I guess they want to be more like Discord now?
EDIT: This means I can’t access /r/HFY ;( That’s a heartbreaker for me. (Short science fiction stories)
I stopped participating on reddit awhile back, but I still lurk on some trans subreddits. I always use old.reddit. It’s the only way to use reddit that doesn’t feel like using a another Fisher Price infantilizing app. If I can’t access old.reddit, I’ll stop lurking even on the subreddits I lurk on.
