My own little conspiracy theory… the reason why Apartheid-goons felt themselves authorised to treat someone like Steve Biko in whatever way they felt like while they couldn’t do the same to somebody like Nelson Mandela was because Biko came from an impoverished, commoner background, while Mandela was born into royalty - royalty, mind you, that, more often than not, played collaborator to the Apartheid-regime and without which the Apartheid-regime would have had a hard time keeping control of rural South Africa.

You’ll have to excuse me… our history down here is so full of gigantic holes - we were ruled by a violent fascist oligarchy for forty years which was, in the early nineties, allowed all the time in the world to engage in an orgy of historical record-destruction that has few equivalents in the modern era.

So there’s a lot where we are just stuck “filling in the blanks” by ourselves.
