Soccer and Basketball Academies are not completely free or at very low cost anywhere in the world.
Why and how can they be in the US?
I think it should be more than that. I think communities in the US need to socially reorganize around community centers. They should have courts and fields for all major sports and a whole lot of the smaller sports, but we should think bigger. They should also be areas for groups for hobbies, interests, movie nights, stuff like that. The YMCA and American style private sport “club” teams have stepped into the gap, but that shouldn’t stop us from taking it back from private organizations and making these public.
But how is private equity supposed to make a profit on that?
Soccer and basketball academiesSchools in the United States should be completely free or very low costFTFY
One of the biggest obstacles to participation in youth programs in the US isn’t money, it’s transportation and time. Having a parent available for hours on weeknights plus away games for months implies a solid middle class home before any dues are collected.
In more well resourced sports like football and baseball, getting the poor kids a ride home after practice and games is often essential for the program.
Not exactly. “Club sports” have become a way that a lot of children players are developed; it is now out of the ordinary that a kid only plays school varsity sports.
What is a soccer or basketball “academy” and why should it be free?
It is a school designed to develop players in a sport. Soccer is known for this, with major European teams having deep academy structures as a way to develop players.
Last I checked the YMCA offered memberships to kids and teenagers for less than $20/month. Is that “low cost” to you?
til apparently there is some sort of schools to learn sports as like. a main thing.
