Should always vote on a full stomach
It should be slightly worrying to everyone that a new leader can just go on a political purge like this after being elected. Just because it happens to align with one’s personal politics this time shouldn’t matter. Next time it might not.
Either you’re ill-informed about Hungarian politics, or you’re posting in bad faith.
Orban, his predecessor, setup this system of winner takes all and then gerrymandered the voting to give him the 2/3rds voting power to basically do as he wished. Which he did with massive levels of crony capitalism, corruption and siphoning money out of the EU purportedly for development of of the country but which went into his and his mates pockets (to the point that the EU ended up cutting the funds off).
The majority of the Hungarian people despaired at the corruption but over turning it was difficult. Magyar managed to build a coalition whose job is specifically to remove the corruption, including removing the constructs that allowed Orban to put this in place which they are using to remove it.
This bill is part of a wider set of initiatives which includes a new constitution to make it considerably harder for this to happen again.
Even if they weren’t elected on a clean up corruption platform, this initiative is something most countries would allow when more than 2/3rds of the elected representatives are aligned on something. In the US a similar super-majority (senate plus HoR) can over-rule the president and force laws that he refuses to sign, and to remove (impeach) the president.
Your concern is ill-founded. This is a clean up of a deeply corrupt state, it’s not just a difference of political opinion, and the majority of Hungary is solidly behind it.
This pretty much sums it up. Every single thing they did ao far was based on their program/promises during the pre-election campaign. The majority of people voted for this (hell they expect it) and it does not come as suprise to anyone who is following the Hungarian politics.
please share with us, what good did he do in the past, why does he deserve to stay
Please read what is actually being said.
I think you’re confusing the parliament’s president with the Prime Minister. This guy seems to be more like the Hungarian equivalent of Speaker of the House, as I understand it. The rules are different, of course, but for Americans like me the difference in usage of the titles can be confusing.
If the “political purge” is creating term limits so that elected officials have to rotate out… it doesnt seem much like a purge and more like a consequence of not allowing life long politicians in office.
The only purge seems like the president, and it was literally part of his campaign promises for parliament to vote on a new one if i recall correctly.
I mean, for sure power can corrupt, but this is a government that was elected by its people to go in, investigate widespread corruption and they cant do it with the people they need to investigate holding the keys.
Sounds like a paradox of tolerance situation here.
I mean, he did secure a super majority by negotiating with a large coalition of parties. Let’s hope this actually leads to a healthy parlamenterism
Americans: “Wait, you can do that?!”
Sure, just get the American parliament right on that!
American oligarchs: “No, YOU can’t.”
Good.
If Sulyok refers it to the court, Magyar has said he will launch impeachment proceedings against him, which would suspend him from office automatically.
I’m sure this is something that could easily be abused, but it seems like the right way to do this.
It was an abuse of power when established by orbans party after 2010.
Essentially, they are all falling victim to having someone else hold the authoritarian reigns of power.
They built the system so orban had all the power. Far too much power for a functioning democracy.
And now those same rules and laws are being turned against them.
Sounds like they’re Hungering for new leadership.
Sounds like they’re Hungering for new leadership.
They are Hungary for new leadership was right there, just how bad are you at puns?
Doh!
