This is just encouraging squirrels to evolve the ability to phase through obstacles.
My original plan to elegantly thread the wire through the grid to tie it all together didn’t work out so I used the tried and true zipties, but otherwise am content with this Thursday afternoon project. $16 bought me enough materials to make probably 4 cages like the one pictured.
Careful, squirrel deterrence can easily become an arms race as the local ones learn.

If you have any extra pots, try filling them with the same kind of moist potting soil but no seeds. They’re looking to bury nuts for winter. Maybe they’ll plant you a tree.
