A little bit yeah, gay people especially are downplaying things because they’re the most comfortable. There’s also the whole growth of the ‘LGB without the T’ which is mostly white cis gay men.

That’s kinda reassuring and sad at the same time. I was asking because I’ve sometimes expressed the “glass half full” opinion that trans hate being very prevant today is perhaps because the bigots lost their fight against homosexuals and are moving onto an easier target, and I was a bit worried that this kind of thinking could be misconstrued as what the comic shows.

I guess I should have realised the “fuck you, got mine” mentality is not just boomers. Humans are gonna human =/

They weren’t fine with trans people. They just thought they were a special kind of gay men, usually to trick straight men and convert them to homosexuality.

“This guy is upset about how trans people are being treated, I should scold him for not being upset earlier.”

Would it have been nice if he connected the dots sooner? Absolutely. Is a lecture going to time travel? No.

“This guy is dismissing trans-oppression and acting as if they have never faced it before and it’s now it’s only fair that it’s their turn to suffer what he did.”

My read is dude is a clueless lib leaning boomer. His lines indicate less dismissal and more lack of knowledge, which is fair for the average person, not like the news was reporting about trans folks getting AIDS in the 80s, trans folks basically didn’t exist to the media at the time. His lines also don’t seem to imply trans folk deserve suffering, just that its a foregone conclusion, which is also a wildly different beast.

I think the problem with the framing here is forum habits. It was true on reddit and it’s no less true on lemmy, looking for someone to be wrong and someone to be right is a shit way to have a discussion. It’s either someone is bad and wrong for not knowing something or not exhibiting perfect empathy or some poster is bad and wrong for judging the first person differently than whoever is currently doing the judging.

Adding voting mechanisms to conversations seems to be a great way to get people to bicker rather than actually attempting to communicate in good faith. People don’t seem to act this way in person or in voice mediums.

JK Rowling doesn’t know it, but there are probably Transgender FanFic communities where they write about Hagrid as revenge for her bigotry.
