I don’t understand people like this who act cheerful at the prospect of the AI bubble bursting as if that’s going to make AI dissapear. No - you’ll still have AI like you do today but now with further screwed up economy. The dotcom bubble bursting didn’t make the internet dissapear either.
you’ll still have AI like you do today
A great many people today use only the proprietary, software-as-a-service providers for their LLMs, diffusion models, etc., and those services are indisputably costing far more to provide, than the revenue gained from users. They are funded to ridiculous levels by investment from funders who haven’t yet figured out they will not be getting paid.
That kind of service will not survive the bursting of the current hyperscaler bubble. We will not have today’s low-priced access to (and therefore we will not have shoved down our throat, in every application and device and online service, at low cost) the gargantuan resource-guzzling data centres, because the hyperscalers will not be keeping those operating when their investment funds dry up.
The subprime mortgages bubble didn’t make mortgages disappear, but it forced stricter regulation of mortgages. And lack of regulation is a major problem with current commercialized AI. In fact, so far the companies have been lobbying very hard against regulation.
Furthermore, propping up the AI bubble is also screwing up the economy. Some of us would just like to see the bandaid ripped off before more long term damage is done.
Finally, put yourself in the position of a Gen Alpha entering the job market. You can’t find an entry level white cost job because companies think they can replace you with AI. Someone in that position sees no benefit from continuing to prop up the bubble. If the bubble bursts, at worst they’re still in the same situation, at best the job market opens up again.
The longer it inflates the more painful the pop. Better to get it over with even though it will be painful. Not continuing to build data centers powered by fossil fuel would be a big benefit too.
That bubble also funds giant amounts of commercial disinformation around ai, which is doing a lot of damage. You simply do not want such error-prone systems manage patient health data and such.
It’s just a betting game. Some will win, most will lose. Sad thing is that most people who lose never opted in to participate in the game.
