I was once in pre-Putin Russia and the police took my car away. My hosts had some influence and talked to the chief, who turned red like a tomato, and I didn’t have to pay the fine. Which would’ve been something like 50 rubles. We then took our piece of paper and tried the same with the company that was running the impound lot. They were not touched at all by the influence and we had to pay to get the car out - 400 rubles.

I learned something that day. About capitalism, I guess.
