95% of the time i play games i play with friends, otherwise i just watch youtube. Can anyone maybe help me? (i know this is little to work of off but i dont know what to say)
I no longer play games solo, but I’m old now and game maybe 4 hours a week if that
You’ve said you watch a lot of youtube a lot, I think you should stop it. I used to watch youtube a lot as well. In reality I realised that I rarely finish watching youtube feeling relaxed, fullfilled or inspired. And the longer I watched the more dread and hoplessness I felt because I’ve wasted so much time when I could be doing something productive.
A while back my friends and I challenged each other to stop using social media (mainly youtube) for a month and we all learned a lot, we realised how much it was sucking out of our lives and how little it was giving back to us.
I would challenge you to do the same! Quit youtube entirely for a month. It might be difficult at first but eventually you will probably stop thinking about it and realise how little it mattered. And you’ll gain more apppreciation for other more meaningful things like video games (but probably not only video games)
oh yeah thats really interesting!!! i dont think im ready to fully quit like that but ill try to only use it when i actually have nothing else to do or something
I think you might be in a similar boat to me. It’s very possible you have high functioning depression. Gaming on your own feels pointless (even though you really want to do it), but playing with friends is great because it staves off that feeling of loneliness on top of also being able to play a game.
i really dont think im dihpressed, and gaming on my own doesnt really feel pointless, its just that im procrastinating starting a game on my own lowkey
i think its mostly that i just watch youtube all day and its obviously really stimulating, so it kinda makes my mind “numb?”, and i dont really feel stimulated from games since im used to flashy old youtube
High functioning depression can still be affecting you without you seeing it as depression, but I hope you’re right and you don’t have it. Do you instead perhaps have inattentive ADHD?
no idea, but i feel like i have a little bit of adhd? a guy i watch on youtube has adhd and i can relate to some things he says
I’m riddled with it so maybe this shared experience we have is more on that spectrum (rather than my depression). If you see any other things that may be affecting you in your day to day life I do recommend getting yourself diagnosed though. Just knowing and understanding alone is a great help when it comes to this stuff.
true
I don’t know why you need help. Its not like a disease or like that. You just enjoy a specific type of games or genre, that’s all.
What type of “help” do you ask for?
i know that i like singleplayer games, and i do enjoy them but most of the time i either just stop after a couple of minutes or never even start in the first place
i WANT to play them, but i just cant and i dont know what it is
maybe its that i watch youtube all day? or is it that my friends barely wanna hangout so the best thing i have is playing with them online?
Hmm I see. Well its hard to say. I can only say, that there was games in the past (single player Breath of the Wild and multiplayer Underlords) that wasn’t fun to play at first. But I kept going for different reasons. Then it clicked with me and those became very beloved games by me. Maybe it is really just to play the games until they are fun.^^ If you really miss your friends and always have that in mind when playing without them, then I don’t know what advice to give.
If you stop playing after a few minutes, maybe start playing games that are meant to play in short bursts of time… without friends. That would rule out story based AAA games, but you would play on your own and get used to it maybe. I’m thinking of games like Brotato in example.
i do like arcade ish style games more and im not that interested in games with massive stories
Maybe try genres you normally wouldn’t? Gaming is rather diverse in that regard.
i dont think that would work since my backlog is huge, and ive started a good chunk of em, i just never get any further for most of them
What about Half-Life and Portal series??
dont think thats my thing, and i mostly play on older consoles + i dont want to buy even more games since i already have so many
Games are way more fun with other people.
When I play games by myself it is to relax and unwind. I like everything from real life solitaire to strategy, RPG, and action games. I prefer to play with others, given the chance though.
Perhaps you have never found a single player game that you like or you just prefer the company of others? It is hard to tell without more information.
i honestly dont really know myself
I had this friend who had sailed the Pacific Ocean by himself and climbed several mountains. A very outdoors kind of guy and he decided he would try computer gaming. He put together a badass PC and got a bunch of realistic flight gear like throttles, rudders, badass flight stick, extra touch screens, etc.
He spent all this time and effort and just could not get into the simulator he built. Computer gaming just wasn’t for him.
i dont think thats the case for me cause i love like everything gaming, but its just hard to get into the actual games (i mostly play on older consoles btw)
I grew up playing consoles, what console is your current favorite and what genre of games do you like?
oo i kinda like all of my consoles equally (wii, ps2, xbox 360 and technically switch but i barely have any games), and i think i like arcade style games? im not really that into massive story games
Games are way more fun with other people.
Depends on the people and on the games.
Nothing wrong with preferring multiplayer games. If your problem is that there are single player games that you really want to enjoy but can’t concentrate on for very long then perhaps you should look into attention deficit treatments.
its almost exactly the second one, i really really want to play my singleplayer games and i know they’re fun and i do enjoy them, but i just can’t really get into it or even start at all. maybe i need to watch less youtube
I feel it’s like reading a book. While I am, like everybody else, inclined toward the path of no resistance, I always end up having fun playing a new game. Starting a new game always feel a bit like a chore, but it always end up clicking to the point I keep thinking about the game and looking forward to play it.
Sometimes just going for a 15 minute walk can help a bunch. Thinking about something you want to do without digital distractions can make it a lot easier to get into when you get back.
ooo thats true, maybe ill try something like that, also my backlog is huge and i have too many consoles (im not tryna flex this is for info)
Sometimes I have some YouTube videos running on a second screen while playing. And for story moments I just pause them.
yeah sure, but that just feels so sloppy to do and probably fries my brain to a crisp 😭
It’s fried already either way. Might as well enjoy it.
Make it music so that it feels “correct”.
theres still hope twin, if you, for example (not saying that you or me should do this, its just for demonstrational purposes): if you quit youtube and stuff entirely and dont go back, it will most definitely improve your overall mental state and such. keep going at it 🥹❤️🩹
edit: im not saying that you need to quit, just try to minimize the stimulation. to start off, maybe try playing games without a youtube video playing or atleast switch it out for music, and try to watch less stimulating videos like mrbreast (extreme example) and more like some dude talking about a game for 30 minutes (kinda extreme too)
