The Sikorsky S-40 introduced large flying boats to Pan American Airways and became the first aircraft to bear the famous "Clipper" name. Although it logged more than 10 million miles and served reliably, its drag-heavy design quickly gave way to the more advanced S-42, limiting production to just three aircraft.
