Maybe I’m splitting hairs here but doesn’t a “Sputnik Moment” require the nom-satellite-launching side to realize that they have some work to do? Because I don’t think the US (or the West in general) have realized at all that there even is an intellectual gap to China (to the benefit of China) let alone that this could mean that there is work to be done.
I’d argue that we’re just starting to reach that moment right now. Cause a lot of tech people are now using Chinese LLMs and realizing they’re not actually behind. And it’s causing a lot of existential angst right now.
