From what I heard being good at chess is pretty much all about pattern recognition, as in recognizing similarities with moves from past games and gaining an intuition on what to do based on that. Experience gained through pure repetition and grind basically. If you are looking for a game based on actual grand strategic thinking there are probably way better games out there.

Mid-game in chess is where creative thinking and employing tactics to carry out a strategy comes into play, openings and end game are the rote recognition parts.

All games could be simplified down to pattern recognition at the high level so I don’t think that’s really a fair critique.
