The (many, many) witch burnings in history highlight sociological problems that still exist today, and given we’ve collectively slow-walked addressing them, reactionary movements are back in force, and pose a catastrophic existential risk.
It may just be human nature: We are very resistant to letting go of power even when not doing so is dangerous. And before we let go of harmful customs and traditions, we have to suffer a lot of harm.
