The Netherlands will return to the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027 after abandoning a boycott over Israel’s participation.
Earlier this month, Ireland announced it would not participate in the event for a second year in a row, citing the ongoing loss of life in Gaza.
AvroTros, the broadcaster that usually facilitates the Dutch entry, said in August it would boycott Eurovision for a second year, arguing recent changes to the rules, preventing countries involved in “armed conflict” from hosting, were unclear.
But it left the final decision in the hands of other broadcasters in the country, and on Wednesday the NPO - the umbrella organisation for the Dutch public broadcasting system - said it would take over responsibility for the Netherlands entry.
So this is less “abandoning the boycott” and more “a different broadcaster volunteered to run the entry”. The broadcaster who announced they would not participate still isn’t participating, from what I understand. Ireland wholesale said they would not be involved, while a single Dutch broadcaster said they wouldn’t be (and still aren’t)
NPO is the umbrella organization so they probably forced their sub-broadcaster to release the rights to do Eurovision because they didn’t want to do it. The Dutch government forced their main public broadcaster to take over the event from the sub-broadcaster and then participate because they’re cucks for Israel.
Right. Still a dick move to support genocide, but it’s less “this one broadcaster reversing course” (as implied by the title) and more “the Netherlands circumvents the only broadcaster with a shred of morality”
But then it’s worse optics. People thought the Netherlands refused to attend, while what actually happened is that the Netherlands wanted to attend but the broadcaster of the org that managed their part refused and the org agreed. Then the Netherlands forced the parent org to comply and they forced the broadcaster replacement to one that didn’t care.
To me this is much worse than the country reversing course because it means that they didn’t even do the diplomatic tango in the first place.
I’m not fully clear on the specifics but I assume this was done under pressure from the Dutch government which the title refers to. But Avrotros also left the final decision with the public broadcaster so they too didn’t keep their spine straight.
