It was just a bucket with water and sugar, both white and brown, 4 and 4 pounds of each in about 4 gallons of water, and the stovetop distiller came out blue, it even seemed to be more blue the next day. I retched up the bit I drank before I realized how bad it was.
Anyone experience this before? Is there a reason this 48 hour turbo yeast, sugar, and water, in a bucket, could come out blue?
Thanks for any help, brewing supply has no answers, the internet search engines are giving me nothing on point.
I don’t know for sure, but it sounds like you ended up with something unexpected in your mix. It’s possible something strange is growing in there.
Because of the blue coloring, it seems more likely that some unexpected compound is reacting with the copper parts. You mentioned the yeast you used tastes bad. Any chance it has the skunky or rotten egg taste like sulphur? Copper isn’t usually very reactive, but it does react pretty readily with sulfur and some of the resulting compounds have a vibrant blue color and would taste awful.
Either way it’s probably a bad idea to drink it.

You don’t; just switch to “Discussion” next time you create a post (Piefed).
What colour is the bucket? Has it changed at all since the begining?
Does the distillation setup include any copper component?
The bucket is white, the wort was dark, like blackish, which it normally is like a golden colour. There is a copper coil from the top of the pot through a little water container on top where a silicone tube hooks onto it to carry to mason jars in my case.
But I used the still just a few days prior on a 24 hour turbo just a few days prior, and it wasn’t then or ever before blue, and the smell of this stuff is just off, it’s volatile, I don’t think it’s ethanol. It can’t be ether I don’t think that requires acid being added and other specific thins.
Theres your problem, the wash was shit.
It was just 8 pounds of sugar in water with that disgusting turbo yeast, (I usually filter the end product through charcoal to lessen the funk taste of the turbo,) and 4 gallons of water. Same as dozens of times before, but instead of ethanol it seemed to have produced a volatile death smelling substance. The blue could be from the copper but it was just used 5 days prior with no blue, and no death smelling volatiles, just funky tasting moonshine, or whatever you want to call it.
Are your heating elements ok?
I am heating over an open fire, in a stainless pot, copper coil from top in a stainless container on top you fill with water to cool it, then a silicon tube to your collector, I use mason jars.
So nothing was different from the other dozens of times I’ve done this. Temperature was cold at night, I haven’t fired up my woodstove yet, but I don’t think that would matter.
link doesn’t work. is that a placeholder? If so you don’t need one to post on lemmy.
Oh huh thanks, yeah placeholder, both times I’ve posted on lemmy it made me use a url, idk what is going on, but it errors until I put something in there.
Weird. I agree with your work around. It’s not supposed to be needed ,lol
