    Cardboard doesn’t allow oxygen through. It’s a worm death trap beneath. The barrier sucks but at least it allows water and oxygen to penetrate. But truth is with that much mulch they don’t need a weed barrier.

      Depends on the climate.

      Florida back yards would like a word… fff, weeds grow through weed barrier with mulch on top.

          You wouldn’t believe it. Even going from a… stares at map I didn’t know exists 8a to a 9b is a shock. Grass has to be cut more than weekly in the wet season. Sago palms and bushes that kinda barely made it in an 8a blow up and are hard to even trim back. Real trees are utterly useless when a hurricane comes to mow them down (which palms specifically evolved to survive).

            Cool zone grasses, like rye and fescue, love cool and wet weather. During prime growing season we mow every 3 days :D But yeah, we don’t worry about hurricanes here. Just plough winds .
