China saw itself confronted with enemies to the north and south and wanted to break the encirclement it saw itself in, hence the support for cambodia. Vietnam had sucessfully unified and beaten up anyone who would threaten it and some elements were eyeing towards more advantagous developments in the north and at sea.
The situation was a powederkeg. With most players having understandable reasons for their actions. All came to a head in a very messy border war in which both sides claimed victory and sea skirmishes either side wants to forget because they were that unecessary. Good thing the CPC and CPV are determined to get along again.
