Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. Microsoft wants you to buy a new computer. If you bought your computer after 2010, there’s most likely no reason to throw it out. By just installing an up-to-date Linux operating system you can keep using it for years to come.

Installing an operating system may sound difficult, but you don’t have to do it alone. With any luck, there are people in your area ready to help! Find someone to help you.

This has actually lit a fire under me. I built a PC maybe 10 years ago and put windows on it out of laziness. It’s been fine at what I need but it’s age does show. I’ve been hemming and hawing about what to do next but I’m lazy and put it off.

Now with Windows 10 losing support it forces my hand to finally do something. I ended up ordering a desktop from System76 just today (won’t be my first experience with Pop). After I transition all my day to day stuff to that new PC I’m going to wipe my windows box and test other Linux distros with it. So I’m relieved and excited that Microsoft has made my decision for me!

The hard thing for me will be deciding what to do with my Microsoft Surface Go (first Gen I think). I see some guides online to switch those to Linux but it seems more challenging for my level of experience. It’ll probably be my next project.
