Republicans Target Federal Anti-Hunger Program as They Prepare Trump Tax Package

As part of their forthcoming package to cut taxes and reduce federal spending, Republicans proposed expanding the existing work requirements to cover food stamp recipients up to age 64, including those with children who are at least age seven.

That amounts to a significant expansion of existing law, which currently only requires beneficiaries up to age 54 to work in exchange for SNAP, and excludes those with dependents. Studying similar Republican proposals in recent years, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has estimated that work requirements and other rules could result in millions of enrollees losing access to the program. (The budget watchdog has not yet released an analysis on the party’s newest proposal.)

Republicans also proposed limiting nutrition aid to only U.S. citizens and green card holders. States would be required for the first time to contribute funding to the federal food stamp program beginning in 2028. And the Republican proposal would try to limit future administrations from boosting the benefits that low-income Americans receive in nutrition aid.

      If they do this it’ll affect my elderly friend who’s been down on his luck and has been struggling to find a job. None of this shit is a surprise but it still really sucks. :[

      I’ve been trying to help get him on better footing, and when we finally got him on food stamps it was pretty much lifechanging for all the struggle he’s been through.

        THANK YOU!!! People fucking love to say things like “just leave the country” and not provide any further details like “where a person with no university degree can get a work permit” because a regular passport does not allow that! Kind of an important thing to get get sent back to this garbage heap. And under the table work for cash does not count. Never mind that unless there is a complete collapse no one from the USA will ever be able to apply for asylum elsewhere and even then I would still doubt it. Even in the skilled trades, you are still unwanted by the rest of the world. If I could just sell everything and leave it would have been done a long time ago.

        I’ve worked with people that came to Europe by boat and eventually regularised their situation here in France. I myself did 5 years in the FFL to secure my citizenship. It’s not supposed to be easy, but I guess you’re not desperate enough (which is great, means things aren’t that fugged yet and you can still plan ahead!). But I’m NGL, the situation can feel/is(?) very claustrophobic and unsolvable, I hope you find somewhere safe to be in whether that’s inside or outside the US.

        Maybe you’ll even get poorer and it’s safer and comfier to be poor in Denmark, for instance, than in the states? But yes, you’re right, it can seem impossible and I would be in a bit of a obfuscating panic if I were in that situation. I should’ve been a bit more thoughtful with my first comment, my bad.

      I don’t think it’s cowardice, there’s just no where to go. It’s not like if an American travels to China they can get a job in the field that that they are already in and make a decent living.
