Nigerian writer Wole Soyinka , winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 and the first African to receive that award, was denied entry to the United States on Tuesday after authorities revoked his non-resident visa.
The 91-year-old author suggested that the move could be related to his recent statements against President Donald Trump and his support for causes such as those of the Cuban and Palestinian people , positions that have generated friction with Washington’s foreign policy.
Soyinka, one of Africa’s most influential literary voices, has dedicated his life to denouncing oppression and corruption, with works that address themes such as freedom, injustice, and human rights. His career combines poetry, theater, and essay, making him a symbol of intellectual resistance.
In an interview with local media, the Nobel laureate stated that the matter transcends the personal: “It’s not about me; I have no interest in returning to the United States. But there is a principle at stake.”
He also recalled that in 2017 he publicly tore up his US green card as a gesture of rejection of Trump’s immigration policy and assured that he has no intention of applying for a new visa.
According to the official notification, the revocation was based on “additional information obtained after the visa was issued ,” though no further explanation was offered. Soyinka, however, believes the decision may be due to her recent criticisms, in which she compared Trump to Idi Amin (1928-2003), the Ugandan dictator known for his brutality.
Throughout his career, the Nigerian artist has staunchly defended the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples, and has expressed his support for Cuba and Palestine as examples of resistance against domination . His commitment to intellectual freedom and social justice has kept him active in public debate, even in his advanced age.
With over nine decades of life, Wole Soyinka is a moral and cultural icon who uses words as a weapon against intolerance . His work demonstrates that literature is an essential tool for challenging power and defending human dignity.
