This kinda happened to me at a workplace.

I tried to negotiate my salary when I began and they said they don’t negotiate salaries because people of color and women are disproportionately less likely to negotiate than White men who benefit from the practice. And I’m like, but… I’m a person of color?? They wouldn’t hear any of it. One of the worst jobs I’ve ever had.

It’s corpo socialism using woke talking points as a cudgel.

Edit: glad Lemmy had users that are fans of public funds bailing out large corporations. But I want you all that downvoted me(cause you don’t have a grasp of the English language!) to know I truly don’t care what you think. If a for profit corporation requires public (read “social”) funds, then they don’t need to exist. 🖕 To all you idiots.

The first time I heard that years ago, I was astonished. Who would accept such a thing?

“Buying a car is easy at RipOff Motors! You just pay the sticker price, no haggling! Isn’t that GREAT!”

I’m showing up on the 28th of the month with the dealer cost in mind, and a willingness to pay 10% above that. If you don’t want to haggle, I’ll just go to one of the 20 other dealerships within a 30 minute drive.

I successfully haggled with a “no haggle” dealership. I made an offer, they declined, they called me a week later to see if I was still interested, I declined, 15 min later they lower the price on their site to about the number I wanted and I called them back.

That’s why I always buy at the end of the month, when either the sales rep and/or the dealership are trying to hit their quota for the month, and are far more willing to cut a good deal.

That’s exactly the proper response. If you can’t negotiate individually, because it’s “bad for the individuals,” then negotiate collectively - “for the good of the company.”

They won’t negotiate your salary for your own good. That’s some 1984 doublespeak for you right there.
