Had to call up a company and their hold music was Metallica’s Enter Sandman. I liked that. Got all the way to the final chorus before I got to the person I needed to talk to. What I find pretty interesting is that the wait time was briefly interrupted by someone picking up, but when they put me back on hold the music picked up where it left off instead of starting from the beginning.

Wouldn’t they likely have the same source for all lines on hold? I doubt each line that is on hold has its own hold music.

I believe so! The ones that have actual music would work like a very small radio station.

It’s kind of interesting to think about how it might affect royalty costs. The start of Enter Sandman is so recognizable, it might actually cost them more to restart it!

MOH is typically multicast, meaning it plays one track to all callers at once. You locked out in that the company you called hasn’t been sued by that band yet.

I swear to god when I was working IT, some vendor we worked with had the superman movie theme song as their hold music and I once had to sit through it for 2 fucking hours because none of those lazy motherfuckers were around to answer the phone.

How was the sound quality? I’m always flabbergasted theres still
hold music that sounds like it’s coming from the bottom of the ocean. Phone systems are all digital now. Its not like this is some 8 track Muzak tape thats been on an endless loop since 1979.

This may surprise you, but I’m not going to pay to store lossless FLAC and stream it to you (and hundreds/thousands/millions of others). It’s just not a concern

Who said anything about lossless freaking FLAC? A 96kbps MP3 would still be leagues better than some hold music I’ve heard. Like seriously, sometimes I swear I’m listening to a Fisher-Price sing-along book that laid on the course of a demolition derby for a couple years.

I would’ve had to ask the attendant how that BGM got picked. Also wondering what industry the company is. Depending on the nature of your reason for calling, hearing that song might have actually relaxed me just because it’s hilarious 😆
