Lemmy.world may be the biggest instance, but making new communities here isn’t the best idea. The entire point of the Fediverse is distributed load. Spreading traffic over as many instances as we can makes the network more resistant to technical errors, and to administrative problems. Every large instance has had its fair share of administration complains, and lemmy.world is no exception. It seems to be a rule that the best instances in terms of leadership are all smaller ones, though that may just be because most instances are small.
There’s also the fact that Lemmy is not the future of the threadiverse. PieFed has just about all the same features Lemmy does, and a few more, especially regarding moderator tools to help grow communities. For example, it has a feature to move an entire community and all its posts to a new instance. Which is awfully helpful in this current situation.
Some people might complain that it’s easier to grow a community from a large instance, and they’re wrong. Lemmy Federate can be used to ensure a community is fully federated between all participating instances, defederation notwithstanding. So choosing a smaller, more featured instance like piefed.social can only be good for the community and the fediverse.

What kind of hardware and bandwidth does it take to run a Lemmy instance btw? Do you need like massive storage?
Here are the PieFed specs:
