On January 24, 1924, this adorable Soviet grandmother was born: the legendary Red Army sniper, Zinaida Markovna Ivashchenko. Single-handedly, with her Mosin-Nagant rifle, she killed 57 Nazis.

Wounded three times in battle, she was never defeated by the Nazis. Zinaida, with her rifle of justice, fought until the final victory in Berlin and became a Hero of the Soviet Union.

These Soviet heroines are never mentioned in Western history books.

This is great to know. Seeing her, I could not help but be reminded of Shewareged Gedle, which is fitting since she also struggled against Fascist colonialism.

Somewhere in a holler in West Virginia, someone’s grandma is practicing while waiting on her chance.
