I’d say he didn’t predict it, he just observed it. It’s been happening for ages, most of us were just to dull and complacant to care.

And now seriously; we are looking for a way forward. It’s good to have such a rich history, and one that gives us so much inspiration. His scenario is one we can apply now, going forward as we go for( more) independence.(#e)

It really sucks having to admit that the French were right all along, though.
Tbh, if look at European History from a certain perspective; one could argue that Western-Europe was the US sector and Eastern-Europe was the USSR sector. I mean even Western-Germamy was divided in 3 Allied sectors.
There was no real Europe post WW2, France apperantly being an exception, perhaps?. All other smaller nations, have been doing a balancing act. It took decades to rebuild and to form ECCS, EEC, EC, and finally, the EU. Now after 80 years there is “a Europe” and a developing real European Identity under it’s ca. 450 million populace.
The U.K. had always this special relation with the US, as do some other Nothern European countries like The Netherlands ( New York was New Amsterdam). The French used to have Louisiana and other regions, so in a sense there should be a connection too. But somehow the special relation has always been with Canada (Quebec). Generally speaking Canada seems imo more culturally aligned to Europe.
Then again, USA has gone so completely off road and off the normalcy charts that it’s become completely unrecognisable. But this US “Maga trend” started imo already many decades ago. Now it’s undeniable.
What’s ironic is that de Gaulle created a strong presidency, mirroring the US system, and in doing so created the western European system most susceptible to a fascist takeover and subsequent collapse.
