To be honest, I don’t have much to say about ongoing geopolitical events that hasn’t already been said in previous threads (e.g. with India/Pakistan, Trump/Putin, and of course occupied Palestine), so this is more of a “news roundup” preamble for this week.
As we all know, the US (and the imperial core generally) has only three permitted international actions: sanctions, color revolution, and war. None of these have been going well lately, but sanctions are in particularly dire straits right now. Three examples from the last week or so:
-
The EU is on its 17th sanctions package, apparently, which is surprising, as I thought they were on their 76th or something. It apparently targets Russia’s shadow fleet of oil tankers, but I don’t think anybody actually gives a shit because we all know it won’t achieve anything, so, moving on…
-
The head of Nvidia (as well as many others) have come out and said that the US chip export controls on China have failed, remarking that China’s internal motivations to develop alternatives are strong and proceeding rapidly, especially as China’s number of skilled scientists is only growing. Nvidia has said that they had a 95% share of China’s AI chip market in 2020 or so, but now they only have 50%.
-
Lastly, an interesting one: Iran has received its first set of railway shipment of solar panels from China, and there is hope for accelerating shipments of even more products. Myself and many others have predicted a decoupling of Iran from the West and towards China and Russia (especially if any Western-built product could have Israeli devices implanted into them, such as with the pager terrorist attack on Lebanon’s doctors), and having a strong link with China will be a necessary step for Iran and their allies to continue their offensives against Israel.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don’t want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it’s just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

‘Syria and Israel share common enemies’
The self-appointed interim President of Syria Ahmed Al-Sharaa says
- The Cradle, May 31, 2025
Ahmed Al-Sharaa during an interview with the Jewish Journal stated that Israel and Syria share “common enemies” and said he is ready to engage with Tel Aviv if there is “a clear path to coexistence.”
“The era of endless tit-for-tat bombings must end. No nation prospers when its skies are filled with fear. The reality is, we have common enemies — and we can play a major role in regional security,” Sharaa, formerly known as Al-Qaeda leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani, told the Los Angeles-based publication.
“Peace must be earned through mutual respect, not fear. We will engage where there is honesty and a clear path to coexistence — and walk away from anything less," he added.
Sharaa also voiced support for reviving the principles of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement (Dofa Accord), calling it a possible framework for “mutual restraint and protection of civilians.”
The statements from the de facto president come amid reports in western media saying Israeli and Syrian officials have been engaged in face-to-face talks over recent weeks aimed at “preventing another flareup along their shared border.”
After extremist armed groups led by Sharaa took over Syria in December, Israel promptly destroyed the country’s military capabilities and occupied large areas of Syrian territory in the Golan Heights, Quneitra, and Deraa.
“There are indirect talks with Israel through mediators to calm and attempt to absorb the situation so that it does not reach a level that both sides lose control over,” Sharaa said earlier this month, also describing Israel’s continued airstrikes of Syrian land as “random interventions."
He also said Damascus was talking to states that communicate with Israel to “pressure them to stop intervening in Syrian affairs and bomb some of its infrastructure.”
Colombians Continue National Strike in Defense of Their Labor Rights - Telesur English
Article
The mobilization seeks to pressure Congress to guarantee workers’ rights, said a SintraONGS spokesperson. On Thursday, Colombians continued their two-day national strike in support of a popular referendum on labor reform promoted by President Gustavo Petro.
In Bogota, workers, and students gathered in the morning at the National Park with flags and loudspeakers, organized by the leftist Historic Pact party, the Single Central of Workers (CUT), the Colombian Federation of Educators (FECODE), the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), and other grassroots social organizations.
Citizens marched through the streets to the rhythm of batucada in a spectacle that included some protesters on stilts waving Colombian flags. As the march advanced along Seventh Avenue, people from other parts of the city joined the mobilization, which maintained a festive and combative tone.
The massive march arrived at Bolivar Square, where citizens waved Colombian and Palestinian flags, symbolizing the convergence of social struggles in the agenda of the popular mobilization. “This mobilization is part of the national strike to pressure Congress to guarantee workers’ rights,” said Yeimi Cante, spokesperson for the Union of Workers of Non-Governmental and Social Organizations (SintraONGS).
Bolivar Square was filled with banners proclaiming “The referendum will happen because it will happen” and “The people say so and they are right,” while citizens shouted slogans against 30 years of neoliberal governments that have stripped Colombians of their labor rights with the false promise of creating more jobs.
“Labor legislation is more than 80 years old. We are proposing that it should be more progressive and updated in accordance with reality,” said CGT President Percy Oyola, who announced that another national strike has been called for June 11.
“Today we are here because the social, political, and popular summit determined that we would hold a 48-hour strike,” he added, denouncing that the political elites “continue to steal Colombia’s chances of having better working conditions.”
This week, social protests were sparked by the Senate’s rejection of a referendum on labor reform, which was proposed by President Petro, who called on citizens to take to the streets to defend social justice.
“We’re here because this issue isn’t just about politics, it’s about dignity. We don’t want to grow up in a country where working means precariousness and fear of getting sick,” said Mariana, a sociology student who was marching with a banner demanding the approval of the referendum.
Russia to Resume Security Consultations with Latin American Allies - Telesur English
Article
We are focused on resuming five-party consultations in the Russia-Nicaragua-Bolivia-Venezuela-Cuba format, Shoigu said. On Thursday, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu called for the resumption of security consultations with his country’s key Latin American allies.
“In addition to bilateral negotiations, we are focused on resuming five-party consultations in the Russia-Nicaragua-Bolivia-Venezuela-Cuba format,” he said during a meeting with Jose Ornelas, the secretary of the Venezuelan National Defense Council, held as part of the 13th Moscow International Security Conference.
Shoigu stated that Venezuela is one of Russia’s “key allies and strategic partners” in Latin America and internationally. He emphasized that relations between Moscow and Caracas are constantly expanding with new, mutually beneficial projects.
“Bilateral political dialogue is developing intensively at the highest levels,” he said, noting that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro visited Russia in early May to take part in celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Victory in World War II.
“During that visit, he held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. We are focused on implementing the agreements reached. For our part, we confirm our interest in organizing dialogue at the level of security councils,” Shoigu said.
Baracoa’s Chocolate Legacy: A Tradition of Passion and Resilience - Telesur English
Article
In Baracoa, Cuba’s chocolate capital, the legacy of cacao cultivation and chocolate production remains deeply woven into the town’s identity. For José Alexander Eugellés, who has worked in Baracoa’s chocolate factory for 28 years, crafting chocolate is more than a profession—it’s a way of life, inherited from his father and shared with his sister.
The factory, inaugurated in April 1963 by revolutionary leader Che Guevara, processes all of Cuba’s chocolate, relying on Baracoa’s unique climate and fertile soil for high-quality cacao. With annual rainfall of 1,500–2,500 mm and an average temperature between 24–28°C, the region remains Cuba’s top cacao producer, contributing 75% of national output.
The chocolate-making process in Baracoa’s factory demands 24-hour shifts, beginning with roasting cacao seeds at 150°C, followed by shelling, grinding, and pressing to extract cocoa butter. The resulting cocoa powder becomes the base for artisan chocolates, natillas, and confectionery blends.
A recent $8.5 million investment modernized production lines, replacing older machinery with Swiss and Italian technology, doubling processing capacity from 3,000 tons annually. However, in October 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated cacao farms, severely impacting exports to Europe, reducing shipments from 400 to just 250 tons.
Despite hardships, chocolate remains a lifeline for Baracoa, sustaining hundreds of families and preserving traditions dating back to the early 19th century, when cacao first arrived via Santiago de Cuba. While locals may not know the legend of Quetzalcoatl, the Aztec god who gifted cacao, their dedication to this craft ensures that Cuban chocolate remains a symbol of resilience and pride.

Also Liam Cunningham, who played Davis Seaworth in Game of Thrones and the priest who talks with Bobby Sands in Hunger is on the ship too. Legitimately a good idea for famous people to go on this ship. Yeah Israel is bloodthirsty and doesn’t care about global opinion but their position is more precarious by the day, they will need to think twice about doing anything to the ship IMO.

A lot of criticism of this online. I’ve seen it in English and Arabic. I do have some questions though.
Is this a scandal in Chinese media? Also, Can anyone explain what the heck is happening with the Chinese foreign ministry that allows this to happen like this? They’re not stupid, they must know this is a terrible optic…

"Forum of Supporters of the Struggle against Modern Practices of Neocolonialism - "For the Freedom of Nations! also known as FFN is a Russian-led inter-party movement uniting various political parties of the states of the Second and Third World with the stated aim of countering modern manifestations of colonialism.
The movement was officially created in February 2024 on the initiative of the United Russia Party after the founding General Assembly of the “Forum of Supporters of the Fight against Modern Practices of Neocolonialism” was held in Moscow. Since then, political parties from more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Europe and the CIS have joined the movement.
Chairman: Dmitry Medvedev
Countering modern neocolonial practices is understood by supporters as the main goal of the “For the Freedom of Nations!” Movement. These practices include the imposition of sanctions and restrictive measures, weaponization of currencies, cultural indoctrination, falsification of history, information and psychological campaigns, etc. The Movement positions itself as a Forum for consolidation of the political movements from countries of the Global South.
Some of it’s members are: Algeria’s FNL, Azerbaijan’s New Azerbaijan Party, Belarus’ Belaya Rus, Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), Venezuela’s PSUV, South Africa’s ANC, China’s CPC, Laos’ Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, Indonesia’s GOLKAR, Serbia’s Serbian Peoples’ Party, Myanmar’s Union Solidarity and Development Party and many others.
So is this part of BRICS or just some Russian exclusive friendly political parties club?
