This assumes that I would select a product based on brand recognition. I do not. I generally select food products based on ingredients and price per unit. And I use similar metrics like materials and build quality for non-food items. Advertising only works if you don’t put any active thought into your purchasing.

Pdfs are not always made on computers. In most office environments you are going to run into scanned documents. Scanners like to do funny things and people dont always put all the pages in the correct orientation.

I may be misremembering, but I believe there is another quote of his about how he regrets making one of the tools look like a saw. He wanted all of them to be totally nonsensical items.

That would add a ludicrous amount of cost to the device in both material cost and R&D. It’s so incredibly unlikely that any company would make that investment just to spy on the conversations of ordinary citizens when there are far cheaper and easier ways for them to build and sell advertising profiles.
