IMHO each new version of Windows looks & feels different to the last anyway, so most (general users) wouldn’t know the difference - they just need a web browser an email client and an office suite.
That 1 Windows-only program they use is probably not compatible with the next version of Windows too
Just wanted to address the point about Fairphone -I’m not affiliated with them, just proud to purchase from them.
The company’s ethos is to be fair to consumers and their suppliers, to avoid conflict minerals, fair wages & working conditions, etc.
It’s this that I look for. Not the nation that mined the metal, aasembled it, wrote the OS, etc.
It’s a Dutch company with a - fair - global supply chain
I’m using a Pi Zero as a voice satellite with an additional mic hat and a speaker hanging off the audio output and it’s … ok
There’s definitely much lower WAF with this option
The voice assistant has built-in audio which appears to be high (enough) quality and considering it’s case, power, etc, not to mention funding the advancement of open source voice control, it’s just overall “better”
If you’ve got a Pi lying around with a mic & speaker, definitely give it a go
What’s the general thoughts on running a TOR node?
I think an exit node would probably get my (domestic) ISP asking some questions and / or my static IP getting blocklisted quickly
Yep, BOINC has regularly warmed my home office over many a winter… until I shutdown that machine.
Maybe I should try again…
And clean up the crime scene…
Yep. Like a map website…
You’d need signal boosters at regular intervals, which need power… so now you’re running multiple cables.
But you can’t run them too close together as the power will induce noise in the data cable.
And after a long distance even the power needs boosting.
And to protect the cables, you’d need to bury them or put them on poles. Separately.
At a certain point, cable becomes the expensive option…
I’m just glad I’ve still got my MythTV running.
