Reminds me of Synecdoche New York. The husband was a telescope, the wife was a microscope.

I recently watched The Boy Who Harassed the Wind. It was unexpectedly refreshing to watch a movie without any white people in it. Western media is typically made with whiteness in mind: either white people are the main characters or there has to be some white self-insert character to convey how the story of POC relates to whiteness.

From the expectation of white people being the default, the red hat in this post isn’t so contradictory. And I’m sure a lot of people think this way.

The “free market” speaks

A resolution to the contradictions is inevitable, but this doesn’t mean revolution is inevitable. We could, for instance, succumb to fascism before the revolution begins. (This would resolve certain contradictions and introduce others in turn.) As far as I know, Marx doesn’t endorse a deterministic stance toward the future.

Not to disagree with your overall point about revolutionary optimism.

I can’t even drive through nice neighborhoods anymore. What used to appear aspirational now manifests palpably as wealth inequality.

Or even if they can’t make billions they believe that we live in a meritocracy. So those who work hard will become wealthy and those who are wealthy have earned it.

Tangentially, I’ve had a few conversations with racists who use this idea in support of their racism.

Do you mean to imply that capitalism works and works without repression?

Do you have any resources that you would recommend on the Stalinist vs Trotskyist issue and/or scholarly resources on the history of the USSR? I don’t see anything in your course/advanced course and it seems to be a reoccurring debate.

The right-wing does want to organize: in favor of white supremacy. If being white puts them higher on the hierarchy, then them can reap material gains while feeling superior. That superiority complex prevents them from anticipating the danger they are in; the division of the working class will be their own downfall when the fascism they enable comes back to extract wealth from the white supremacists.

It’s also intellectually dishonest to ignore examples of communal behavior, such as gift economies and communal farrming, as somehow not counting when we’re considering “human nature”. There are exceedingly many examples of selflessness even in this individualist hellhole we built for ourselves.

There is no left wing in America politics. There’s only right wing and farther right wing.
