Switched from gmail to proton, from google maps to Mapy.com (and open street maps more in general), from windows to Linux (on a refurbished - unfortunately American - laptop), switched from Microsoft office to LibreOffice, from Uber to Bolt, largely from ChatGPT to LeChat (Mistral) and Lumo (Proton), from google translate to DeepL, from google chrome to Vivaldi.

Signal presumably has more users than all others combined. Don’t make it too diffucult. You better might switch them to a messaging app that appears to be useful to their other contacts too, not only for messaging with you and each other. Other alternatives: https://buy-european.net/en/alternative-to/whatsapp https://european-alternatives.eu/alternative-to/whatsapp
As far as I know HERE WeGo app is based on OSM and also includes life traffic info

12·2 months agoThe main problem is that far too many Europeans mindlessly cling to everything google. There are plenty of suitable European alternatives. Probably not for every use case, especially in business, but more than enough to grow European tech and support European business. https://buy-european.net/en/alternatives
I think EveryDoor and GoMap!! (in which switching off several less-relevant types of ‘quests’ might be useful). More theme-based MapComplete can be used as well, but that can only through your browser, no special app)

linux4noobs@programming.dev•What distro for creative use switching from windows
5·2 months agoThe Tuxedo option sounds reasonable to me. Personally I switched to Linux roughly half a year ago. Dual boot with both Linux Mint and Zorin. Main reason to choose for those, is perceived accessibility and convenience for people new to Linux. Useful website: https://distrochooser.de/
Similar experience here. Bottomline: in contributing to OSM it’s obviously most important to focus on adding and improving information that is relevant to navigation (addresses, POI’s, street specs). Apps or website like GoMap!! and MapComplete can be helpful, but also tend to distract to navigation-irrelevant specs like building types of barns, subsurface of the playground area, etc.

7·3 months ago“The subsidies do not include the purchase of new rolling stock, as “the link could be operated with the rolling stock currently in use from Zurich to Amsterdam””
Does this mean the train between Sweden and Zurich won’t be an additional train connection but rather a change in destination: Stockholm instead of Amsterdam?..

2·3 months agoWe, as Europeans, need way more focus on buying European, and supporting local innovation, entrepreneurs, jobs and economy.
For everyone who wants to stick the message all over Europe, there are some great tools for that, like some shirts and stickers at https://hardno.eu/, stickers at https://ko-fi.com/buyeuropean/shop and presumably other websites as well.

7·4 months agoGmail —> ProtonMail.
Google drive and iCloud —> PCloud, ProtonDrive, Kooft (still have to drop one or 2).
Google translate—> DeepL.
Uber —> Bolt.
Windows —> Linux (although still mostly using windows b/c company laptop).
Google maps —> Mapy, although still sometimes using google for street view.
Edge, Chrome —> Vivaldi, Ecosia.
Google search —> Ecosia.
ChatGPT —> LeChat (Mistral), although still sometimes use ChatGPT.
WhatsApp —> Signal (open source, although still American) and Threema.
Edit: not really for this purpose. But maybe you can ask ChatGPT or European https://chat.mistral.ai/chat
True, although I think it still has advantages to switch to platforms like DailyMotion (although I’m not a fan of it, and see multiple disadvantages too):
- To weaken the monopoly of the big monopolist, YouTube in this case. Most people are hardly able or willing to leave any monopolist, and it they do, the will only start with something that’s comparable, understandable, easy, and has scale. Not to something that requires some kind of safari through a complicated fediverse jungle where they immediately get lost in discussions about instances and stuff.
- To boost jobs, skills, expertise and innovation in building this kind of tech environments. Which later can contribute to better European alternatives than just relying on whatever USA thinks is good for us.
She did also post that video on a European platform, but even many people in this group aren’t used to check at first whether or not a video is available on a European platform too https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9jkxe0
Exactly. Tried to cast a documentary from their app to my tv yesterday. 100% impossible. In the end, had to watch it on a laptop. https://kolektiva.media/w/ra7bfqXCyqBFn7dSFhneFy

In this situation I proably would just go for the most afforfable option, for example a Linux distro that most suits your needs (have a check at website like distrochooser[.]de or similar website), and then ask LeChat or ChatGPT for advice on how to optimize the power settings
