  • Another thing about seasoned professionals - they have top-down and bottom-up knowledge of how their product works. They can discard a lot of superfluous information out of hand, which allows them to narrow the scope very quickly.

So when a newb is parsing an error log, they look at any and all related errors. 90% of their mental capacity is being used to judge each entry, asking themselves “Is this thing relevant to the problem?” Chasing red herrings.

Meanwhile, the senior engineer can glance over and see the 100 lines of network errors are just an uncaught exception from a deprecated module because a line of code never got commented out. Or some such shit.

  • I think this is probably exactly what Trump’s cronies want.

The news is splattered with pics of Trump and Hegseth and the war room. But those aren’t the masterminds. Trump did not get his position twice by doing it all himself.

He’s a figurehead. In his shadow are billionaire donors, some of whom travel to Russia on a regular basis. So, what happens when NATO turns against the US? Why, just like 1984 - a new alliance with an old enemy. Our NATO allies are now the bad guys. The US keeps oil dominance with the Saudis, sells weapons to Russia and continues trading with China. Trump’s cronies money. Everybody is happy, except the puny citizens.

It doesn’t happen overnight, and it doesn’t happen without rigging midterm elections. But it’s the direction the US is pointed in right now.

  • A well-made axe is art. A beautifully designed house is art. A surgeon replacing your wife’s liver is art. An wide reciever stretching past the line, his fingertips trapping the ball while dragging a foot inbounds for a win in overtime - still art.

It’s all art, my friend. We take a skill and get better. We get so good that people stop and look. I used to be a painter. The blue collar, white ceilings with a roller kind of painter. I was not an artist. My boss, he could cut a freehand line so straight and level you’d think he’d used tape on the wall. Nope, just good at his job. An artist.

But spray paint on a rock wall?! That’s fucking DIFFICULT. Extreme challenge. My boss couldn’t paint that on his very best day. There would be overrun, splatter. The wispy little hair on Yoda’s head would look like Charlie Brown or Homer Simpson.

Ok, I think they’re all gone now. Just between you and I, this is absolute garbage, 100% agree with you - but probably for different reasons.

Yoda is a soldier. He’s not just a grunt, either. He symbolizes conflict and war. He is the hero of a movie franchise called Star Wars. It’s literally a blockbuster movie about war. Glorifying war. So I feel that the artist made a horrible artistic choice in using Star Wars as a play on Stop Wars.

The concepts bump, making it an uncomfortable moment. Like a child who proudly presents you a picture of a violent scene drawn messily in crayon. You want to match their energy, but you’re lk wondering if the little idiot is just messing with you.

  • College tutor here. Held a 4.0 GPA and graduated with honors on an academic scholarship. And I am very much the stoooopid type of person. I would be your worst nightmare as a co-worker. Well, maybe not “worst” but definately on the wrong end of that particular bell curve.

Now let’s dive into the question!

There’s a lot of different kinds of stupid. Some stupid people can be taught. Others just don’t get certain concepts but other times, they pick up things very quickly. Some can learn, but if the knowledge sits dormant for too long, it disappears. Some people just don’t care - if something isn’t interesting to them, they don’t pay attention.

I think what we’re seeing is a HUGE rise in ADHD. All of the above can be signs of a hyperactive mind. We know, of course, that screen time - especially doom scrolling - increases ADHD. People who practice meditation and/or exercise and get the fuck off their screens aren’t as susceptible.

I speak as someone who daily watches with horror as my social skills, wits and mental acuity slowly but surely move left on the x-axis of that bell curve we talked about earlier. My attention span wanes with a constant bombardment of information. I ingest a meme, but before it’s thoroughly digested, I’m on to the next. I read a comment and jump to a conclusion, imagining my clever response but fast losing interest and deleting paragraphs of wordsmithy in a single stroke.

WE ARE NOT STUPID! WE ARE ADDICTED! AND IT’S KILLING US!

Also, this is a contagious condition, so get the fuck off Lemmy and hug a tree. Lemmy will still be here when you return. Thank you I love you good night!
