I suspect this is more about the movement. I’m interested to know how it compares if you pee standing, but then sit immediately after.

Anatomically, the sitting position should provide a better path to emptying the bladder, and there are several comments here saying the opposite to you.

I think the very best for emptying is pee sitting, then stand, sit back down, and see if any more will come out.

Yes, in my experience, aquired brain injury is one of the hardest things for people (and their families) to adapt to, but that’s a whole different kettle of fish than Down’s syndrome.

The post talks about the ethics of pre-emptively aborting a fetus that has a high likelihood of "severe downs syndrome ", and this is something many people face irl ask the time. my point is (mainly) that people with Down’s syndrome can have a lot of joy in their lives, and bring a lot of joy to those around them, despite the fact that they will face certain struggles (as so many of us do, in our own ways). And (secondly), although it’s outside the scope of the hypothetical situation in the op, foetal tests for Down’s syndrome are notoriously unreliable.

I’m just saying don’t be afraid. Most new parents want to avoid any chance of anything ‘wrong’ with their child, but nearly everyone has something…

True, but breaking by not being able to speed up is less catastrophic than breaking by not being able to slow down, or not being able to turn.

Probably the most likely failure mode from old oil would be seizing up when the engine’s cold, so it just won’t start next time.

But you do you, I’m just saying they’re designed with oil changes in mind, and if you do that one basic bit of maintenance it’ll save you money in the long run…

Machines that operate at high rpm are in a category of their own, and a car is probably the only one most people ever own. There are metal parts inside separated by fractions of a mm, moving past each other at like 30-40 mph, back and forth like 100 times a second. It heavily depends on good lubricating oil to prevent heat from friction building up and wrecking the whole thing.

And the oil is a consumable, it degrades as it does its job, and needs replacing every now and again. It’s not part of the MOT inspection because it isn’t a risk to other road users, just damaging your expensive bit of kit (and wasting the environmental cost of the energy and materials that went into manufacturing it in the first place).

I remember my parents planning long journeys using some piece of software (AA branded I think) that would print out all your turns, intersections and distance between them (in the late 90s).

In the mid 00s when I needed to navigate myself, I would plan it out on a map (Melways crew rise up!) and write myself prompts on paper in big writing with arrows so I could glance at it while driving.

Basically exactly like modern sat nav but without the live traffic.

Have you guys spent much time around people with Down’s syndrome? It’s typically not a uniform “life of suffering” like what many comments seem to be assuming.

It’s fair enough to try to imagine how you would feel if you had a certain disability, but never assume you’re right about that, you might be surprised. Especially with intellectual differences, I don’t think you can really know what it would be like to be that person.

Real talk: is this a legit sign of adhd (ie if you relate to this should you start gathering evidence from other data points?) My wife and majority of my friends from my 20s have been diagnosed in the last few years as adults, as well as my elder daughter (and the younger one literally can’t hear if she’s reading, so i have my suspicions…)

Voltage at the generation end is limited by the practical limits of insulating the windings (coils of wire in the generator that need to be close together but insulated from each other), usually top out about 25 kV for steam or gas turbines. This would usually be stepped up to 275 kV or 400 kV for long distance transmission, then back down to 33 kV for local distribution (at least in the UK).

Different solar panels generate different voltages, also depends on how they’re wired together. Not sure what the big solar parks use, but much lower than a fossil fuel plant for sure. That’s DC, so needs converted to AC and stepped up for transmission. Some smaller solar farms are connected straight into distribution networks.

Both power transformers and DC/AC converters do give off a bit of a hum at 50/60 Hz, but again shouldn’t be anywhere close to the noise of a FF plant.
